It was an English vs. Argentine thing, plus there was bad blood leading up the fight. Maidana was making a point, that he wasn't gonna be playing in there.

a warning may have been fair.

But he wasnt attempting a small foul (holding).

He threw an Elbow to his face, which if anded would have caused a cut that could have atered the fight. I think a point was appropriate.

If it was common knowledge that you just get a warning for each foul first then you may as well launch an elbow every fight (fught night round 4 style)

i dont think he was tryign to help khan, he just doesnt like inside fighting, look at the mayweather hatton fight... he seperated them 2 straight away

maidana deserved all he got the dirty *******, theres no need to try knock your opponent out when theyre ready to touch gloves at the opening bell, its pathetic & un sporting

Khan should have had at least one point taken for holding. It looked like a Wlad Klitschko fight at times.

I cant believe ppl are trying to condone Maidana throwing an elbow, even with minimal force, an elbow can cause a cut, so taking a point off was the correct decision.

Khan just kept tryin to touch gloves when he was hurt to get a little bit of extra time. I didn't see him doing it after knocking Maidana down!

The phrase "protect yourself at all times" springs to mind!

I think fighters who are in pain or scared try to touch gloves the whole time, Moslye also did it a lot during the floyd fight, even so much that he ahd a discussion in the ring and floyd finally punched him to man up.

    Why not?
    Protect yourself at all times.
When the bell rings at the start -- you fight.

I have never heard of fighters wanting to touch gloves as a stall tactic when they've been hurt badly until now.

It was the intent to commit an intentional foul. Cortez did the samething to Ricky Hatton vs. Mayweather. Hatton attempted to clearly hit Floyd behind the head while he was turned around with his head threw the ropes. The ropes stopped the punch from making contact but it was the intent. Cortez took a point there also.

Thing with Hatton is he likes to hold on the inside then hit. Hatton will get on the inside and instead of working he will hold, then he will hit after he clinches you. You see this in his fight with Urango too.

Maidana had Cortez on his case since the beginning. It was obvious who Cortez favored.

He did warn Maidana. In the dressing room before the fight. There are incidental fouls, things that happen in the flow of the fight. Those are things a ref is supposed to warn for. If you throw an elbow or something stupid like an intentional butt (i.e. no question, hands down by your waist as you come in with your head) you get deducted a point instantly.

They always say before the fight, in the dressing room, "I will deduct a point [or two points] without warning".
