Pavlik can certainly rebound to greatness, especially if he stinks to 160, where he is still the man. I don't see Cotto achieving greatness again though as he won't beat Margarito in a rematch and Tony is going to be king of the welters for a while yet. Cotto is too small to go up in weight and too big to go down so he will have to settle for the 2nd place maximum in his division for a numbers of years yet.
Cotto has made his intentions known that he plans to retire before or around the age of 30 so if he loses to Margarito again, I don't think he'll stick around to be a 2nd fiddle anyways.
I had forgotten about Cotto's plans on retirement, so if that is indeed true its pretty much impossible for him to achieve greatness. He's a very good fighter nonetheless
Agreed. I'm almost certain that it would be Margarito and either retirement or with a victory over Margo it'd be a fight with ODLH then retirement. Point being I doubt he sticks around longer than 2010.
All good and interesting points Arran I think you're misjudging Pavlik slightly as we've all seen him much quicker and certainly less predictable. Its abit unfair to judge an off night vs. an ATG no?
I've always felt Pavlik is predictable. He starts EVERYTHING with the jab and then the right hand. Everything is jab then right hand. The difference is that at 160, the jab and right hand combo works like a charm because the fighters can't deal with it over and over and over again...and when it gets through, he's way too powerful for fighters to cope with it. Once he gets into a rhtythm with said 1-2 combo, it's impossible to stop it. But at higher weight classes, he's slower and less powerful. His punches lack the pop to make up for his lack of an OVERALL offensive arsenal. I noticed it against Taylor in the rematch and it rang true against Hopkins. Pavlik stays at 160 he will return to greatness...if he keeps tinkering and toying with higher weight classes, he'll be derailed rather shortly.
Agreed, though I do think Cotto's loss was mentally harder to take. Pavlik, win or lose against Hop, had and has those problems for keeps.
True but for at least right now, Cotto seems like he wants a rematch will tells me that he's at least TRYING to get over the fight and move on. It's not like certain guys like Carlos Quintana who disappear after every loss.
It's a big fight...which means Cintron would go down easily and quietly. As for Clottey? He'd surely be a dangerous foe..but I think Cotto beats him on workrate. It'd probably be close enough to warrant a rematch.
Very well put Arran, however in due time I feel Pavlik can rule 168 but not LHW. The only honest competition Pavlik will have at 168 is Kessler and Bute, both of which would be great fights for Pavlik.....and please don't bring up Froch...he would go the way of Gary Lockett
all great fighters lose, but most atgs avenge their losses if given the chance, sugar ray robinson never lost to any man twice till he was way WAY over the hill
Kessler and Bute would give him a hard time..I think people underestimate Andrade although I'm CERTAIN Pavlik would beat him. Danny Jacobs will be a fully developed pro by the time Pavlik settles at 168 and the way I see it, He'll be ruling the roost by then.
