Why could Sergio Martinez go on so long fighting with his hands down, but Roy Jones couldn't?

Realistically it wasn't that much longer. He just entered his prime later because he started boxing at age 20. Roy's peak was from 94-00 he was p4p nr 1 arguably for an entire decade. Martinez peak was maybe from 08-12. You could make a p4p top 5 argument for him for maybe half of that time.
And just like other reflex-fighters like Roy and SRL he started getting caught and dropped almost as soon as he slowed down. Had it been a McClellan or Hearns in there with him instead of Murray or Cotto he may have been iced in the same way because Cotto was hurting him badly with shots that he didn't see coming anymore
