Why couldn't Andre Ward cash in on his Olympic Gold Medal the way Oscar De La Hoya cashed his Gold?

De la hoya’s dreamboat style & ability to close the show going for KOs in the 12th except save against Trinidad .
It was beautiful . ward has an ugly just win style... zero style points.

 

Becuz ward has all the personality, charisma, and appeal of cold oatmeal.

 

I’m surprised the “because he’s black” card hasn’t come up yet from the usual victims suspects. Maybe he’s too white to pull that card off.

 

He just wasn't that marketable. His pro debut was on HBO so it's not like he didn't have the platform, Roy Jones Jr helped promote him as he was signed to his promotional company Square Ring and then of course Ward had the Super 6 to build his profile but it was Froch who came out of that as the biggest draw, despite losing.

Ward's style wasn't fan friendly, his SOG nickname was lame, his personality bland and lets be honest the man was a PR nightmare throughout his career, he always knew the right thing to say to make people switch off, he couldn't sell a fight to save his life. I mean after the Super 6 everyone was talking about a fight with Bute and what did he do, did he call Bute out? Nope he went on holiday for 9 months and told Bute to fight Froch and come back when he has a decent win on his record. Great way of killing the hype, whenever he had any momentum like after he beat Dawson he would do something to literally take 2 steps back and everyone would forget about him again.

 

I love Ward, but he basically looked like stale bread when he turned pro. Even his fighting style looked awkward and brought little excitement. It was after the Miranda fight that he started to smooth everything out.

Look at De La Hoya's list of opponents then look at Ward's. That's why. Dlh fought a bunch of p4pers and Ward fought scrubs. It also didn't help that Ward had a boring negative style, took years off when he started to catch on, and didn't move up as many weight classes.

 

Because Ward isn't for the casual viewer. I love watching the guy fight and he's easily in my top 5 all time of guys ive gotten to watch over the last 30 years. Im not boxing expert but I know enough to see his technical brilliance which I love to watch which is something that the casual fan just doesnt appreciate because they dont see the sport as technical as us hardcores do so they see it as "boring". Also he doesnt have that big personality with the trash talk to draw attention to himself like other fighters do.
