Why couldn't Bowe do to Golota what Lewis and Tyson did?

I've been hoping to have a good discussion about Rid**** Bowe's career. This guy was one thought to be America's Lennox Lewis equivalent. But he had such a short prime and fizzled out fast.

What happened to his career and why could he not handle Golota like Tyson and Lewis did? Was Bowe a greater potential fighter who simply let himself go and get out of shape? Or was he simply never that good?

Or did Golota and Bowe simply finish one another, and neither was the same afterwards? Was the Golota Tyson and Lewis demolished not the same Golota who handled Bowe so well?

He did have a great first round against Lennox Lewis in the Olympics and then was the victim of a bad stoppage in the second, but then he did himself no favors by ducking Lewis in the pros. And his resume of beaten fighters outside of Holyfield is rather dubious. Plus, Holyfield was not a puncher.

    What do you guys think?

The Bowe - Golota fights ruined both of them. Some of the most brutal fights you'll ever see.

The Rid**** Bowe that beat Holyfield for the title was him at his best. But when Him & Rock Newman saw what Lennox Lewis did to Razor Ruddock they both knew that even at his best Bowe couldn't beat Lewis. So they cowardly renaged on the Gentlemans agreement they had to fight Lewis next,
As Newman sais to me " Why should we risk it all against Lewis when fans will buy Dokes & Ferguson for little to no risk".
Had Bowe fought Lewis right then I could have been a good fight & was the only time Bowe would have had a chance of maybe beating him.
Bowe ate himself out of an ATG career . He had one of the greatest trainers in the game in Eddie Futch. If he wouldn't do it for Eddie he wouldn't do it for anyone
Bowe was his own worst enemy

No, Golota performed well against Ruiz and Byrd later. Somewhat against Grant.

Yeah, I mostly agree. Rock Newman was just out to get more big paydays, he never really cared about his fighter's legacy or what ducking Lewis would do to it.

I was hoping Bowe might make a comeback after he went into the marines, but he washed out of everything after the Holyfield fights. No discipline at all its ashame. Unless you count his three fights against nobodies in the 2000's a comeback.

Bowe was always lazy, even in the amateurs he was known to be lazy. On the way to the title he fought every other month, meaning he was almost always training and that kept his weight down. After winning the title Bowe went on a world tour and piled on the weight. Futch was angry at the time because he knew this would happen and Bowe's laziness and bad diet would see him balloon up in weight but Newman wanted Bowe to cash in and get him doing as much media work as possible.

Golota was all wrong for him. Bowe was basically a heavyweight Diego Corrales a tall guy who was exciting and great on the inside but ordinary from range. Just watch him struggle with Biggs to see how Bowe couldn't slip a decent jab if his next meal depended upon it. Golota would have given prime Bowe all he could handle, maybe even beat him.

Bowe was clearly ruined by the Golota fights, the first fight was bad enough the 2nd fight was just brutal. Golota did take some damage but I don't think he was ruined by those fights, it was his shoulder issues later on that ruined him and took away that great jab and even without a 100% jab he came close to winning a title twice.

I think Golota was pretty good. He had mental issues, yeah, but he really took Bowe behind the woodshed for a spanking. Bowe, on the other hand, simply isn't as good as people think that he was. That's why he couldn't handle Golota.

Was Vitali all wrong for Lewis? Bowe vs Golota was fat , slow , pushed out his punches and fought with no intensity whatsoever.

You need your eyes checked if you think that version reflects on Bowe at his very best.
Even at his worst he pushed the best , undefeated version of Golota over the edge.
That Golota was fresh young and a far more skill full and well rounded boxer than Vitali was.
Great trainer Lou Duva thought him all the tricks of a great Heavyweight - superb defence - rolling , weaving and counter punching like a giant Mike Tyson.
If zombie Bowe breaks him down and shatters his will , prime Bowe absolutely destroys him.

Lewis could barely handle a geriatric Holyfield who had the punching power of a middleweight at the time.

And Lewis still needed to strap a full body protector around himself:tired
