Oscar was a crossover star. He had people order his PPV not because they like boxing but because they like Oscar. My best friends sister orders his PPV just to see him . She could care less about the actual fight. These are the people that help make Oscar the biggest PPV boxer this Decade.
Somewhat agree. Oscar was my favorite boxer in the mid-late 90s. I had several female friends that could care less about boxing back then but went to watch Oscar's fights in PPV parties. Although you mention Oscar's losses, he had built a loyal following since his gold medal performance in the 1992 Olympics. True, he was the Golden Boy, the pretty boy from East LA, that worked hard and got the marketing from the media. But he sure backed up his image and hype with the convincing wins before his first loss 6 years into his pro career. So he lost a few more fights, but he had already earned that hype and adoration beginning with his gold medal.
The real reasons are alot of factors. Looks, marketing, the only gold medalist for the US that year in Olympics, easy to get along with personality. Don't forget Oscar was the last US boxer to really get regular TV coverage not cable and he took what was given and ran with it. Like him or not he always wanted the best fighters in the sport win or lose.
Oscar had the perfect story, well-documented(Winning the gold for your dead mother? Powerful stuff) and all the talent to back it up. Fought his ass off and looked like a million bucks getting America it's only gold medal in Barcelona. He looked incredible in his first 20 or so fights. Beat the **** out of some highly thought of guys. Add his looks, and a latino fanbase that was way more behind him than most can admit or stomach, and he was made a superstar, just like Leonard was.
Can't believe how underrated Oscar's fighting ability is whenever he's discussed. The man fought the best and competed against the best, he was actually giving Hopkins a decent fight and a far better fight than Trinidad when he fought him. Oscar had it all, serious skills, serious speed, serious power and granite chin. I assure you if Pacman lands at will against Cotto like he did with DLH it will be lights out and early. How many P4P#1 fighters has DLH fought?, check it out yourself, the man is A class and an ATG.
De La Hoya was beat by Hopkins, Mayweather, Whitaker, Quartey, Sturm, 2 times by Mosely, and with the exception of Pac he is more popular than all of the fighters that beat him. It is kind of funny that the person who started the thread had to ask why he is so popular. Go out people and try to get a job, borrow money from a bank, get a loan or a grant to go to college and watch you not get it. Then watch who does get it and you see then you will know why De La Hoya is so popular
i like oscar...he had GAME, thats for sure....no doubt...BUT..... stuff that rubbed me the wrong way 1) no rematch fights with trinidad 2) no rematch with quartey 3) no rematch for whitaker 4) he does rematch with chavez- who cares? he butchered him in fight 1 for 4 rounds 5) wasting fights in his later days against campas, mayorga instead of guys like forrest and winky 6) i expected much more of him against mayweather..he fought tentatively , while he was the much bigger and naturally stronger guy 7) thought it was bush league to fight a tiny guy like pac....even though it back fired and he lost...other fights that could have happened were winky, forrest, paul williams...but as typical DLH, he made a fight that made money rather than one that people were wanting to see 8) and people count his WBO title for 160 when strum clearly won that fight...wasnt even close i give him mad props for fighting hopkins...i bet my life he wouldnt step in ring with him when rumors were swirling, and i was wrong..and he was doing well and holding his own until he was dropped
So is Oscar now getting criticised for NOT being negro or asian ? I think people need to pull there head in and stop being green just because somebody else has looks, skill, brains and makes the most of opportunities, unlike some who sit behind $100 PC screens wondering how to spend the next welfare cheque.
