Why did Ali leave the ring after the 2nd Bugner fight before the decision was announced?

Admittedly, I haven't the whole fight but I've watched most of it.

I always got the impression it was because Ali was annoyed by Bugner's tactics. He didn't acknowledge Bugner in any way once the fight was over.

Ali was annoyed by Bugner's tactics? He had absolutely zero right to be after the stunt he pulled, falsely claiming Bugner called him the N word (don't like using that word even if it's filtered).

Whether he had the right to be annoyed or not is beside the point.

If that was his reason then that was his reason.

His given reason was just that "it was too hot in there to wait around". It was a sweltering day in Malaysia, made worse by the TV lights under a plastic canopy. Everyone there was suffering - even some of the reporters at ringside were feeling faint.

This is probably the answer. Just too warm to stand around and talk.

Bugner loved Ali. I He left because of the heat.

    I doubt that.

Ali didn't look like he was about to collapse. After fighting for 15 rounds, staying in the ring for a few minutes shouldn't have been a problem at all.

In his third title defense within 100 days, Ali endured the moist 90‐degree heat of a midmorning sun in this tropical metropolis before about 10,000 spectators in outdoor Merdeka Stadium. Even before the decision was announced, the champion left the ring, then he required about 15 minutes before appearing at a news conference.

“Tired,” said Ali. “Too hot. The heat was bad. But we both had to fight in it.”

I agree. The Young-Foreman bout in comparison to Bugner-Ali "the tv lights had created more heat at ringside than in any recent bout except for the Ali-Joe Bugner title match in Kuala Lumpur that was seared by the tropical son"

Thanks. I didn't know about this.

From what I've read about Ali, I would still be surprised if this was his genuine reason.

If he did leave the ring before his opponent because of the heat then I think his pride would prevent him from admitting it afterwards.

It seems more likely to that he would have either stayed in the ring (like in Manila) or come up with a different excuse for leaving it when he spoke to the press later.

He certainly didn't look anything like as tired as he was at the end of the third Frazier fight.

Wasn’t it Ali that always made it a race and religion issue. There’s no evidence that Bugner ever used racist language against anyone.

I remember reading that Bugner said that Ali falsely accused him of calling him the n-word and told Bugner afterwards that it would help sell the fight.

Yes I’ve heard that too. Ali didn’t have to do that. Imagine being labelled a racist just to sell a fight. Anyway it was slightly unusual for Ali to leave the ring like that. Maybe it was safety reasons. Didn’t Bugner say some crackpot bad threaten to shoot him. Any it was strange. No doubt Ali had his reasons.

And Ali was very fond of Bugner. I agree that it was because of the heat.

We're getting our fights mixed up. Ali asked Wepner to call him the N word to bolster the gate. Chuck said he couldn't do that because he had Black friends and sparring partners. Chuck also bought his wife a negligee and told her she would be sleeping with the champ tonight. She asked him what room would Muhammad be in.
