It was also revealed after the fight that Ali had been examined at the Mayo Clinic, and the results were shocking. He had admitted to tingling in his hands, and slurring of his speech. With the conclusiveness of Ali's loss to Holmes, and Ali's worrying medical condition, it seemed incredible that he fought again.[2]

According to Ferdie Pacheco, Ali's former ring doctor, "All the people involved in this fight should've been arrested. This fight was an abomination, a crime."[10] Pacheco had earlier quit Ali's camp, in 1977, after Ali's fight with Earnie Shavers. Pacheco claims he had sent Ali's medical results to Angelo Dundee, Jabir Herbert Muhammad, Ali, and Veronica Porché Ali noting that "This is what's happening to you. If you want to continue, you have no shot at a normal life." [11] Pacheco says he never received any response to his warning.[11] In 2012, Ali met Pacheco for the last time and told him "you was right", something he had said to Pacheco several times before. According to Pacheco after Ali's death in 2016:
Couldn`t people tell Ali was finished or did they think his performance against Spinks was good enough?

2 billion viewers my ass. Yes people knew he was washed up. The fight was on OnTV not regular channel. Why do all fighters fight on? Money money money. Where do you get yr facts. Do you read books on boxing subjects to REALLY learn or just mimic others.

mark ant, just a little advice, if you want to take it,...you should rely less pn your "cookie cutter" approach to your threads. Instead of leaning so heavily on new agey crap like Quora, Google, and that infernal 1996 issue of Ring magazine...just come up with your own, original content for your threads, whether they're good or bad, at least everyone will know you aren't just parroting someone else's thoughts.

Yeah, there's no ****ing way. Flatly impossible. There were nowhere near enough functioning televisions in the world to accomodate 2 billion viwers in 1980, which, without checking, would be either a little more or a little less than half the total world poulation at that time, man woman and child. If every single man on earth between that age of sic=xteen and sixty watched the figt, that would still probably be quite bit less than two billion.

The fight was on closed circuit tv which makes 2 billion people impossible.

They were worldwide figures not just the US, Ali was still a global superstar at that point.

Yes, the figures sound odd but there were more than enough TV`s world wide to get those figures in 1980, what are you talking about?

"The Last Hurrah", was a professional boxing match contested on October 2, 1980 in Las Vegas for the WBC and Lineal Heavyweight Championships.[1][2]The fight was estimated to have been watched by a record 2 billion viewers worldwide.[3] I pasred this from wiki.

I will stick with the stats below....but hey, somebody felt 2 billion watched
Closed-circuit telecasts peaked in popularity with Muhammad Ali in the 1960s and 1970s,[17][18] with "The Rumble in the Jungle" fight drawing 50 million CCTV viewers worldwide in 1974,[20] and the "Thrilla in Manila" drawing 100 million CCTV viewers worldwide in 1975.[21] Closed-circuit television was gradually replaced by pay-per-view home cable television in the 1980s and 1990s.[18]

In 1980 there were hundreds of millions of people in China, India, Africa and South America who did not own televisions at all and probably didn't even have access to one at the local pub or something. I'm willing to bet there were not in fact 2 billion televisions in the world in 1980 even if you count those sitting around on store shelves and in warehouses. I could be wrong on that last point but I'm about 80% confident.

The population of the entire planet was just under 4.5 million in 1980. Half the world was watching this fight?

    No, just no.

My Turkish friend just told me his first television was bought in the 70`s in Turkey, which is a poor country, there are countries in Africa that are richer than Turkey.
