Some of the positions in the NFL have the role you state but then there are others that have far less. Just a little observation I make to stir my US friends - as you well know a rugby team cannot carry a kicker who cannot tackle nor play the whole game - but NFL can.

    Very true.

Although Ireland did carry O Gara for a few years and he couldnt tackle.:D

(Kidding, the guy was great....and luckily we had good backrowers to fill in for him when needs be!)

In 1905 alone, 20 people died playing football. Does rugby have those numbers? Watch a football game before replying, please. Research how many have been paralyzed playing football. Look up Dennis Byrd. Try playing football. I've played rugby a number of times while I lived overseas. Completely different game and yes, I was more than comfortable playing rugby without pads. As a high school football coach, I know the dangers of football are exponentially higher.

I played football, so I can explain. Those who died back in the day from football were primary from skull fractures. Football is more physically demanding than Rugby. The NFL football players are bigger / faster / stronger, and generally do not lateral the ball or kick it once they have possession of it. They take the hits. A very big man in Rugby is about 240 pounds. Most players are under 220 pounds. In the NFL you are talking over 300 pounds.

Rugby is a rough game too, but one can protect themselves and they do not suffer the same amount of head shots like they do in NFL football. A quarterback can be blind sided, or a receiver going up for a ball, whacked. Combo blocks against of knee dives happen all the time in the line play.

Special teams kick or punt plays are full speed collisions with big men getting a running start at each other.

Wilder started amatuer boxing in 2005. He turned pro in November 2008 and essentially fought very weak opposition until 2012.

You could say he had seven years of the amatuer game and was ready for prime time in 2014.

In truth the final amatuer fights for Wilder were MUCH harder than any of Wilder's first 20 fights.

It's hilarious how so many people from Europe think the NFL is a soft game because they wear pads they're really ignorant. It's hard as hell these guys are animals out there big guys running full speed who hit like trucks. Like I said earlier I challenge any of the non-believers to come to Texas and try to practice with a good high school 6A varsity football team and these are full of 16-17 year old kids they would twist you up and change your mind real quick.

Because the Soviet Union are now allowed to box and the sport is now more popular around the world. The American Mafia doesn't control the sport anymore either.

I agree with this. If American football was an Olympic sport, the USA would win by 10 touchdowns if they wanted to.

In addition to size, speed, and power requirements, you have to be a good athlete too, and tough enough to handle the pain.

Could you imagine being the quarterback for Japan or Germany vs. NFL stars in an Olympic format?

I watched a game of NFL once, 15 minutes of gameplay between 2 hours of advertising.
