I know he has a reputation for not working as hard as he should have, but what are the details behind his collapse

Lack of motivation and unhealthy lifestyle. Shame about Wilfred who was sublimely gifted. Had he been more disciplined,we'd be talking the Fab 5 instead of Fab 4.

Surprised he lasted as long as he did.

He was diagnosed with severe brain damage as early as the late 1970s. His condition deteriorated rapidly after that. Hed been taking punches to the head since he was about 5 years old.

He accumulated quite a few fights early and was in a lot of wars against some of boxing's best.. The claims about his lifestyle and possible early brain damage would certainly explain a lot of things if they were true. Man had an incredible career. Titles in three weight classes. Wins over Roberto Duran, Antonio cervantes and Carlos Palamino. Tough losing efforts against prime versions of Leonard, Hearns and Hamsho.

if one is a fan of SRL, they dont like to admit Wilfed was an easy fight for Hamsho. they always say what went wrong after the Hearns fight whereas I remember the press had him very near the top p4p rankings and was one of the great success stories of 1982

nothing happened to him in the hearns fight as far as damage. it was in the Hamsho fight where he got in trouble becuz he was trapped in a corner for most of the fight

it was after that fight his career went south

the knockout loss to Hilton was the final nail in the coffin. u could see the birdies tweet as he fell to the canvas

Dude seriously. I know you enjoy reactions, but you've been at this for what? 7 years now, if not more? doesn't it get old?

palamino was a rough tough hard as nails fighter.what an era that was for welters, in another era he could have held the belt for a lot longer.

I think on the way up Benitez may of been seduced into thinking he was an emerging boxing messiah, especially after the Cervantes match, However a bit of a rude awakening by Bruce Curry may have given him some food for thought ? his chin could be found, even by a far cruder operator, Palomino held him level in the boxing stakes after 10 rounds, Leonard outboxed him ...once his belived unique assets were shown not to be quite so unique i cant help but feel his desire to put in anything like the required effort wained..perhaps a few close people were whispering the wrong things in his ears...

Too many long tough fights took their toll on him, also his lifestyle and lack of intelligence didn't help either...

The man just didn't have the physical and mental genetics for a long career..
