I had Hopkins winning the first and the second a draw. Shouldn't have been a second one in the first place.
This is spot on. As anyone gets older the harder it is to stay leaner than your body want to be. Hopkins had to run like a lunatic to keep his weight where it was. Hopkins will be alot more energetic and aggresive in this fight for sure. His body definitely looks in better shape and more seasoned at this weight from when he first moved up to fight Tarver.
I think that cutting to 160 was really starting to take it's toll on Hopkins. He had to start so slow, that his great finishes starting coming on later and later in his fights at 160. He just let the fight get away from him on the scorecards due to Taylor's activity, and by the time Bhop started imposing his will... it was too late to win on the cards. I think that moving up to 175 was the best thing that he could have done for his career. He has looked completely rejuvenated.
Hopkins has definitely looked like a different fighter at LHW. He is a lot more offensive minded and throws a lot more combinations. His stamina also seems to have improved. Of course the Hopkins hater or Calzaghe nuthuggers don't realize this.
Guys...take it from someone who watched both fights many, many times. Its clear that his gameplan going in was to conserve his own energy, while letting Taylor punch himself out. Go back and watch the fights rather than spout from memory...if you watch it with this in mind, its clear. You could see Hopkins give Taylor an open look (something he NEVER, EVER does), close it as he would attack, then either counter or clinch on hit on the inside. He used his lateral movement, but in different ways than normal, more to stay JUST outside of the jab (giving himself enough room to dodge or block...but not enough to mount an offensive (again, something he NEVER does). Then as Taylor started showing signs of fatigue around round 7 (watch the fight...his gloves started dropping, he started pushing out the jab, he would slump on clinches, etc...its obvious), Hopkins suddenly closed in a bit more....stopped opening his defense up....and used his lateral movement in closer to allow for higher output counters or leads.... Watch this fight with this in mind and if you know jack about boxing (which I KNOW most of you do) you see it clear as day. Ive probably watched the first fight 20 times...and I saw it immediately (tho I am more familiar with Bernard's career than most...so I notice little things like this). But it was honestly genius. Trust me guys...go watch it again.
Hopkins ruined Taylor. Taylor never fought up to that standard again (although he was highly, highly overrated to begin with.)
Exactly. If anyone saw those fights they would know that hopkins could have one both fights, and SHOULD have won at least one (the 2nd).
i thought bhop won the 1st at least a draw and in the rematch i thought bhop did better. bhop had a gameplan and he stook to it, jt just put more punches together and by the way judges judged that fight.they all perfered the the more active fighter then the more accurate fighter. at the end of both fights bhop through less but landed more in every songle catagory with the higher connect percentage so go figgure. plus it was at 160 were bhop was weaker and had less energy waste to try and get jt out of there when jt was hurt.atleast hes fighting at a better weight class for him, so he can be his strongest and have his enegry higher. bhop sayed long ago that he felt he beat taylor and so did manny steward (talking bout the 1st fight) but bhop sayed to beat jt you will have to knock him out and boy was he ever right. spinks to me beat jt, with throwing more punches and hardly getting hit at all and winky scored a draw which i think he bs as well.then came kelly and boom bed time for jermain. joe cal is not jermain t, different styles, different weight, different circumstances just different different different.
And just how is such a feat accomplished with the judges. Feel free to go into details. (And since you're at it, who killed Lady Di ?)
because Taylor is a decent level fighter who wasn't dragged way out of his weight range to fight Hopkins. Hopkins big wins were against guys who should never been fighting at the weight.
How do you have so many posts...yet know nothing about the sport?? What are they all about frickin cricket or something??? Was Glen Johnson, John David Jackson, William Joppy, Howard Eastman, Antwun Echols, Syd Vanderpool, Keith Holmes, Antonio Tarver and Jermain Taylor (arguably) all guys who shouldnt be fighting at MW or above??? My god....do some research before you spout off nonsense please.
Taylor was extremelly strong and a wonderful athlete. The worst in Taylor is probably what Hopkins first pointed out – Jermain is so muscular that he tends to stand straight up, almost doesn’t move his trunk, tends to keep his hands down and pulls his right arm back as he throws the left like a “bowing arrow” but he made it up with sheer physicallity, punch power, speed and the stinging left jab. It was all about body against mind with Taylor expected to have the body.
Genius? He lost twice. I don't care if he fought whilst standing on his head, any supposed elite guy who loses to Taylor can't be fighting a 'genius' fight plan.
