Why did Canelo Alvarez vacate the WBC belt? (160 lbs)

    Hey casual here

I’m looking at BoxRec and I see that Canelo Alvarez won the 160 lbs WBC belt at 155 lbs. How is that possible? Are they not supposed to weigh in at 160 lbs?

And my second question is why did Canelo Alvarez immediately vacate the belt afterwards? I thought the WBC belt was the most prestigious belt.

You just need to weigh within the MW limit, which is 154.1 to 160.0. Typically when it's title fights, no one liked catchweights. Title fights should be allowed to the limits. But if the guys is really popular, some posters let that slide hypocritically

I think he is still the WBC Franchise Champion 160. Basically it’s like being Emeritus World Cgampion and not having to defend the belt.

It's definitely an interesting question regarding.
He fought at 155 because he was fighting the other guy who was ducking Golovkin at the time, Cotto, and Cotto was enjoying fighting for MW titles under 160.
He then ditched the belt because he wanted to age Golovkin some more and also ''adjust to the weight'' using his chemical enhancements.

To duck Golovkin 2 years later he got beat by Golovkin the first time and then the 2nd times in the rematch

He didn't want to fght GGG until Golovkin had some holes in his game. In hindsight it worked out well for him. In 20 years nobody but the die hards are going to remember how Canelo brought GGG his belts, they will only look at Boxrec and think ginger was the man.

Personally, I suspect that Canelo probably would have preferred to NOT vacate then, but he was still with Oscar, and Oscar would have known that he would have lost much worse to GGG then than he eventually did in the 1st 'draw'.

Regarding the catch-weight, technically we can probably blame Arum / Top Rank on that given it was negotiated with Martinez when Cotto beat Maravilla to claim the belt - somehow Martinez agreed to a 159lb limit, then subsequnetly Cotto negotiated 157 with Daniel Geale and then 155 with Canelo.

Money basically...if you don't fight at the catch-weight, you don't get the big payday...Cotto asked fot it and the other guys agreed...

Again, personally I think that diva crap stinks - if you are the smaller man and want to win a belt at a higher weight, then you should accept that weight's strictures, or accept an asterisk next to the win IMO

Because GGG was the WBC interim Champ and Canelo's mandatory, and Golovkin was inforcing the fight and not taking step aside money. Delahoya, Canelo's
promoter had a press conference shortly after Canelo vacated the title saying Canelo needed 16 months to grow into the weight.

Strictly speaking, that's not true. You can weight less than 154. 160 is just the 'official' maximum limit at the weight class.

Fox gets this wrong all the time when they incorrectly state that HW is 201+. It's not. Heavyweight is simply unlimited.

It's not a fantasy, it's just what 80% + of people think but apparently 3 old men/women who know **** all about boxing are more qualified to judge a fight. GGG outlanded Canelo handsomely in both fights and whooped his ass both times. You have to be smoking some good stuff to think Canelo won either fight, the 2nd one was a draw at best for Canelo, realistically it was anywhere between 9-3 to 7-5 to GGG. I am more qualified than any man to judge the 2nd fight as I've watched it about 10 times, twice in slow motions seeing GGG block 80% of Canelo's "landed" bodyshots with his elbows

Since you're a big fan of popular opinion then you must agree that Canelo is PFP the number one fighter in the world and head and shoulders above GGG at this point, and more than likely will be considered a better and more accomplished fighter than GGG when it's all said and done.

And for the record GGG has been my no. 2 favorite fighter since their rematch.
