Exactly. Chico knew that was his only shot on beating Floyd. He was gonna win or lose on finding that one punch.
Mayweather took Chico out of his fight plan. Thats the fight that made me realize just how good Floyd is.
Weight made a big difference on that night.. The styles didn't gel too well either.. Mayweather made it so difficult for Chico to do what he does best, He stood off and didn't meet him half way.. Corrales looked lost a bit in there..
Corrales was like a tyranasaurus rex for his height he had tiny arms, he preferred to dust it up on the inside too.
He feels the need to press the action. Floyd is much quicker on his feet and hands. He would outbox Corrales from the outside all night so he took a risk and tries to get inside. When he did.... he had 2 secs to hurt floyd bc floyd was on his toes the whole entire fight until he broke Corrales down.
Yup the 'weight' excuse is yet another shot at Mayweather. Chico was the one of the best lightweights in the sport and at the time undefeated, and Mayweather knocked him down FIVE times. As many have noted, the people who deride Mayweather are just as crazy as those who think he's a top 5 ATG - neither is true. He's just am incredible athlete, and his opponents have over 1000 career victories. End of story.
His only hope was to follow PBF around looking to land a big shot. He really had no other way to beat PBF.
I don't understand some of you members on saying that the weight problems that Chico had in the fight is another excuse to hate PBF. I don't think anyone on this thread is claiming anything about Chico winning or losing due to any excuses. It is just plainly asking why he chose that game plan. It seems all threads lead to PBF. "Hey, it looks like this guy might be talking about PBF....hurry, blast him or her with some "you hate Floyd comments". I for one believe PBF is P4P great until someone beats him, but to be paranoid of every thread that mentions his name? Corrales was drained and I for one do not believe PBF would have dropped him so many times if it were not for the weight. Yes, he went back to 130 after his prison stint, but he actually came back at 135 and looked great. Why he tried to go back to 130 is beyond me. He was a very good fighter and he will be missed.
It does detract from Floyds win BUT Corrales would also have murder making weight because he was a weight drainer. Weight drainers cut down to the lowest class possible so they have a size advantage come fight night. Thats what Corrales did and it was both an advantage and a disadvantage
Mayweather was the better boxer that night, or any night... Corrales was a warrior, and even Mayweather commented how shocked he was after 5 knockdowns that Corrales was yelling at everyone who would listen that he wanted to continue. There have been many boxers with more skill than Corrales, but no one ever with more heart, and respect for his fans. I know it's off topic, but I remember Corrales saying that he'd rather die in the ring than have a fight stopped. I remember him saying in the interview that he told people to never stop the fight unless he was counted out on the ground. It's irrelevant why Corrales followed Mayweather. Corrales had to try to do something big, because that's all he had on Mayweather. The bigger picture is, Corrales was not a boxer...he was a warrior. He was an old-school, fan-loving, go out on his shield WARRIOR. I don't care if he had weight problems, short arms, lacked outside boxing skills, etc. He went to war, and won more than he lost, and I love him for that. One of the most entertaining and ballsy fighters to ever live.
