Cortez is just a very poor referee at this stage in his career. I think he just panics.

He was very inconsistent between the two. He broke Hatton and Mayweather sometimes before a clinch was even initiated. The point deduction was also ridiculous when it had caused no damage and was the result of Mayweather spinning into the ropes.

Personally, it made no difference. Floyd was outclassing Ricky at his own game, so it was playing right into his hands. But the point is pretty simple – why was it acceptable for Hopkins to hold and clinch to stop Calzaghe throwing back, but not for Ricky until it was obvious Floyd was stronger in the clicnches?

Against Hopkins, Calzaghe was getting held, hit and frequently received a the nut from the old man. Cagey veteran moves they may be, but they’re still illegal and Hopkins should have been warned as soon as it became clear by the fourth that he was trying to avoid having a fight.

Hopkins was more deserving of censure than Hatton since Hatton wanted to use clinching to make the fight, while Hopkins wanted to use it to shut down the fight.

Humberto Soto was fighting a guy called Lorenzo for the WBC S Feather title. Soto was winning handily when he knocked down Lorenzo, the fight continued and Soto knocked Lorenzo down a 2nd time, it was on this 2nd knockdown that Soto caught Lorenzo as he went down on his knee, after debate Cortez called a disqualification win for Lorenzo. Due to the contraversial finish the WBC didnt award there belt to Lorenzo. It seemed a bad call

Yes, a cynic would say Cortez started to allow the rough stuff once he realized Mayweather could give as good as he got.

Hatton was allowed to hold/clinch, he just wasnt allowed to wrestle, hit and hold and rabbit punch. Hitting and holding and rabbit punching are illegal, clinching is legal

In his prior Hatton fight Cortez let Hatton get away with hitting and holding, wrestling, faking low blows (which he docked Castillo points). Cortez probably decided he needed to stop Hatton being a dirty ****er in any future bouts

The clinches were seperated in both fights, whats the issue????

if you get the chance, then watch both fights straight after each other and then you will see what the issue is.

cortez shows great inconsistency in his refereeing methods to favour 2 american fighters.

with regards to hitting on the back of head. how is hatton supposed to hit mayweather when he was consistently ducking below waist height and turning his back? cortez chose to ignore that.

Nonsense. Mayweather was catching Hatton with lead rights even before the point deduction. Even after the point deduction HAtton got angry and got his ass kicked at the end of the round.

Hatton landed very few power punches. If you want a wrestling match go watch WWE.

Cortez is a bad ref. Hatton is a bad fighter. B-Hop is old and clinches a lot to mask his stamina issues. Calzaghe was a twat.

I think that sums up all of the necessary points, hopefully this thread will die now.

    :D

    a more accuate description

    - cortez changed his refereeing methods to favour 2 americans fighting in america

    - hatton dominated 140lbs and is a very under-rated fighter

    - hopkins lost to every class fighter he ever fought at a fair weight (jones, taylor twice, calzaghe)

    - calzaghe was retired undefeated and will always be under-rated by americans

    - close the thread - we can agree on that one :D

Your description of Hopkins more aptly fits Hatton. He lost two the only two world class guys he fought. His best win is a terribly reffed fight against Kosta Tyszu when Tyszu was well past his prime. Outside of that his best wins are
    -an old, old, old Castillo
-Paulie Malignaggi, who is at best a top 5 guy at 140, but has no power
-Collazo, who he was lucky to squeak by with some generous scoring
Who, exactly, did he dominate at 140? He missed out on fighting Cotto and Floyd at 140 (passed on a fight with Floyd, let's not forget). He was dismantled by Pac in Pac's first fight at the weight. He's stuggled with B-level guys like Lazcano. He was fortunate to fight in 140 when it was a relatively shallow division, and he still missed out on some of the tougher fights there. Cottos resume at 140 shits all over Hattons.

You're looking for evidence of conspiracy where there wasn't any. Cortez was too jumpy in the early rounds of the fight because both guys were swinging each other around and tripping over each other. He settled down after a few rounds, but Ricky still got tooled. He let Bernard and Calzaghe fight out of it because he'd just gotten a bunch of **** for being too active in Mayweather/Hatton fight. The guys a shitty ref, but this is a "damned if he did, damned if he didn't" scenario.

And it's hard to over or under-rate Calzaghe given how little he did. He's lucky he's rated at all given that he was basically a provincial Champ for the vast majority of his career who only fought any really great fighters at the tail end, when their best days were behind them. But even if I rated him at #1 PFP of all time that wouldn't change the fact that he is a twat.

lol your description of hatton is a joke :rofl

he beat a great champion in tyzsu who hadn't lost in years and was number 3 p4p at the time

    he unified convincingly against maussa

he beat urango 11 rounds to 1 on all 3 judges scorecards

he moved up a to 147 and beat a very under-rated fighter in callazo in his very 1st fight at the weight

he k0'd castillo with a body punch

2 of the 3 judges scored the lazcano fight 12 rounds to zero

    he completely whitewashed mallanaggi

his only 2 loses were to 2 of the greatest p4p number 1s of the last 20 years.

    - the cortez evidence is there for everyone to see. just watch the 2 fights back to back.

    - i noticed you couldn't answer the following

hopkins lost to every class fighter he ever fought at a fair weight (jones, taylor twice, calzaghe) - feel free to answer :deal

Easy. Hatton held and hit while fighting on another continent, and when he came to America...he found out that Cortez doesn't allow shite like that in a real fight with real boxing rules... Cortez also did a good job in Hop-Cal too, so I don't see your point.
