Back then Cotto would mix in low blows if the opponent landed anything of significance on his chin. I have both the Corely and Torres fights in my archive. I may have to bring them out and make a few Cotto, low blow gif loops for all the Cotto apologists who attempt to revise history.
I think there are only three real possibilities... 1- Cotto used to focus on the body, when you go for the body your punches will end up low occasionally. Moreover, he was a little hurt when he threw the low blows, so that could have effected his accuracy. 2- Cotto was hurt and wanted to buy a little time so he threw a couple of low blows. 3- Cotto knew that Judah has no mental composure, so he threw a couple of low blows to rob him of his momentum and break him mentally. I personally believe that any of these three are believable. The only reason I question the second option, and believe it to be the less likely of the three, is because he has been hurt MANY times but has not really been known to throw a ton of lows blows. I know there have been other low blows, but none seemed as blatant as the Judah nut shots. That is my take on the fight at least...
Cotto is all about true competition more than he is winning. If you look at who he is, he is not the kind of guy that wants to win via cheating. If anything, Judah is the ball puncher in this story. He went for Mayweather's balls with no shame. Low blows are always going to happen... when you have 2 guys moving in unpredictable patterns, a punch will stray here and there. Cotto being body puncher especially at 140, it's a given just like Chavez had a bunch of low blows...in almost every fight he went for the balls and hips. The pattern is NOT as clear cut as some make it seem. He either does it EVERY time when he is hurt or doesn't. All that he does it when he is NOT hurt but WAS hurt 3 rounds before is BS. Look at the Manny fight, or Margarito fight HURT, yet NO low blows... Logic is key.
' That's a fair assessment. Again, people overrate how hurt Cotto was and forget about the significant of time between the shot he took and when the low blow actually landed.
Said this all along... it was a good shot but Cotto was not about to drop. We have to be realistic...a solid punch is going to make you look funny for a few seconds while you regain your balance etc... your head is gong to snap back and you WILL look dumb catching that punch. This alone does NOT mean you are about to be KO'd. Judah is good, but in the long run he loses focus and I think Cotto is just too durable for a guy like Judah. Too big too... Judah belongs at 140 for life.
Interesting, so there is a history of low blowing from Cotto. I wonder if its taught where he comes from. I'm going to have to watch more fights on youtube to come to a conclusion. :good
Well, if you are doing research on low blows your best bet is to fly down to Mexico and speak with a man named Cesar Chavez Sr. His tendency towards low blows is noted in the archives and only he really hold the secret as to why it is so prevalent in the boxing community. Mr Cotto is nowhere near as efficient with the low blow as Mr Chavez.
Cotto is a cheater that learned to low blow his opponents when hurt, just like Tito cheated with a low blow against Fernando Vargas after Vargas had dropped Tito and had Tito hurt. Tito and Cottom shouldve been Disqualified. Joan Guzman is also a cheater that low blowed Humberto Soto in the 3rd round to safe himself from being KO's by Soto.
If you know anything about Tito... he has his usual flash knock down in round 2-3 and then he gets up and begins to destroy his opponent. If anybody was spared it was Vargas because as he was rolling around trying to get the fight stopped, Tito was able to cool off. ALSO: Watch CLOSELY at who lands the 1st low blow. Vargas hit Tito Low seconds before Tito got him back. Look at Tito's eyes when he gets up after that BS, hyped up flash knock down. He is clear headed and practically pushing the ref out of the way yelling "Yeah!" Vargas was a chump for Tito... 20 sec into the fight he is on his ass... He knew it then and there that his chances of winning were very slim. The biggest cheat in recent memory will be fighting on the 3rd. His name is Tony Wraparito
Haven't heard much of GTSK lately. I think Metal Mandible has died. Hopefully, that hasn't happened with GTSK. What would happen to Batu lol.
Judah likes to used his head on the inside and scrape his opponents brows with his forhead. Cotto was likely trying to back him off the inside by throwing some body shots, and a couple went south. I'll have to rewatch, but nothing looked blatant or purposeful(soas to buy him time or anything) as ppl claim. At least, best I can remember. Too bad for May, Cotto is better today than he was then. And May couldve been beaten by chinachinned Judah back then. Cottos gonna break Floyd down to the body early, then bang him around until Floyd demands he be dqd for beltline body shots......sad thing is, he'll prolly get the win that way.:-(
Wheres GTSK been? i wanna hear his opinion on the Rios-Abril fight. this forum aint the same without him
