Opportunity for another title. It's as simple as that.

Pac fought Cotto at 145 not 143, prior to the Pac fight, Cotto weigh in at 146.

but would a Cotto-Pacquiao rematch actually be at legit welterweight .. or some silly catchweight? (145)

if the big fight options at Welterweight weren't there for Cotto, then you can't really blame him for moving up in weight.

**picking up a paper title at Super Welter won't define Miguel Cotto's career but all things considered, coming off the loss to Pacquiao he wasn't getting a big fight .. so why is going for a title such a bad option?

cotto has always struggled with weight. He likes to eat good and his family genetics seem to be of bigger people. It's no secret he has always struggled with weight and it's kind of his fault since he likes to eat good food. And of course roach knew this so they made the fight at 145 to make it even harder for him.

and the best match makers in the business award goes to...... Arum!!!

Cotto beats easily Ortiz, Berto and a whole lot of top dogs at 147. He doesn't have the height to excel at light-middleweight so he needs to maximize his physical power at lower weights where the opponents are reachable.

He moved up because Arum had plans for him there after losing to Pacquiao. Fighting for a championship at a third weight class being one. But he can still make ww. Steward said it, and for his fight against Mayorga I read a newspaper that said Cotto came heavy to begin the training camp, but that he lost the weight very fast and had to take it easy not to get too light during training.

3 weight champ sounds better than 2 no? That and the fct that there was no real big WW fight out there for Cotto @ the time...I also believe he shuld go bk to 147 and finish his career there

It was clearly just a case of a fighter trying to reinvent himself and try pastures new. The Pacquiao defeat was so total and brutal that he could only ever have been 2nd/3rd best if he stayed in that division, whereas 154 didn't have any fighters like Pac and Floyd so Cotto could have got a title and put his career back in an upswing there (which is exactly what happened). It's like in MMA when BJ Penn lost twice to Frankie Edgar, there's no point in staying if you've been dominated by a guy who is there for the long-term. But Cotto was never a big welterweight and could still easily make 147 if he wanted to.
