Clearly a newbie here. You think the style of punches from Calzaghe are considered "slaps"?, they look like slaps but that's not exactly what they are, those can be serious power punches once committed to them. It's also a very popular punch in the amateurs, do you even know anything about that or you just watch to wait for two clubfighters swinging away without knowing what the hell is behind those punches, the leg movement...etc?, of course you don't and clearly. Those "slaps" finished off Lacy's career, he was rocked in the very first round and was just literally destroyed and nearly TKO'd in the 7th. His career right now and ability to take a punch didn't obviously fade for nothing if those were only "slaps". All it would take is one of those slaps to send you to the nearest graveyard.
U making it seem that it was said, calzaghe only knows how to throw slaps but anyway if they were 'serious power punches' how comes it doesnt Knock out people, calzaghe style is to over pressure his opponent with speed to score points, using his fastest punches the slap. thats why he always breaking his wrist coz he always slapping, Margaritos famous punch his left uppercut >>>> Calzaghe slap in terms of power u will be more likely to quit getting hit with uppercuts, and hooks, and body punches than being hit with straight right jabs, and slaps.
You might want to give credit to Lacy's chin for taking those punches even though hurt/stunned almost every round of the fight, even he admitted that those slaps weren't as soft as he thought they would be.
1. Lacy during almost his entire career demonstrated an ability to take a punch to deliver one. 2. Cotto landed some big punches and was psychologically undone by the fact that Margarito took some of his big shots and kept coming. That's very, very unsettling for a fighter to deal with. Lacy didn't land hardly anything. He had the hope of landing a big bomb and that may have helped in terms of enduring getting beaten to the punch all night. 3. Completely different styles of fights. Calzaghe put on a clinic of quick punches, movement and defense. Cumulative punching is his game. He doesn't go for homerun punches.
Everyone takes the mickey out of JC for the Manfredo fight. I'll admit that was a comical final exchange, but a) I don't blame Calzaghe for wasting energy/risking damage punching Manfredo's gloves and b) Manfredo was obviously cacking himself as he never even gave a little peek-a-boo. Because I'm sure when he did something more meaningful would've come in. That fight was just for US exposure anyway.
Cotto ran out of gas and he was swallwoing blood during 8 rds. Margo was just too strong for him that night. Is Margarito's moment. Cotto can come back. I mean, Margarito has 5 losses, right?? Cotto has one. There is no shame on that
quitting is not continuing when you are physically able to. (duran, freitas x2, vitali) but do not want to take any more punishment. cotto was beaten to the point he was unable to continue, and his corner made the correct decision. cotto had nothing left physically to continue fighting. and to say he quit is bull****. some of you idiots need to learn the difference between not wanting to take any more punishment, and not being able to take any more punishment.
Quiting is admitting defeat. Nothing wrong with that. I think a lot of you just don't like the connotation, but ignore that and look at the meaning. If you do you will be able to see that Cotto did in fact quit.
You are stupid if you think Calzaghe slapped anything in his fight against Lacy. If there's ever a Calzaghe fight where he punched properly for 12 rounds, it was against Lacy. Not all the punches were power punches, but they were straight, accurate and relentless. Please use Youtube or whatever you want to show me some of this "slapping" against Lacy.
Cotto was seriously injured, Lacy wasn't really hurt, just mentally beaten, by Joe's pitty patty punches. He was rocked once, but never was injured the same way. :hat
Yes, but that doesn't matter. He chose to stop the fight and concede, for whatever reason legit or not it doesn't matter. He accepted today was not his day and moved on.
