tomato ... tomato :hey He was getting his ass kicked and knew he couldn't do anything to stop it. My guess is that his LACK of respect for Leonard let him quit on his own terms mentally, not the ass kicking. He knew/felt he beat himself and said F it. IMHO I think Leonard had what it took to beat him in a rematch as is usually a case with Pure Boxers rematching punchers/swarmers, but Leonard's timing for the fight, Duran's lifestyle, and Duran's personal acknowledgment as the fight wore on he let himself down most likely sealed the deal.
So far reading this thread that is what happen. And still today I say Ray won the first fight beat the man at his own game and when Duran tried to fight Sugar's fight he couldn't handle it in fight #2 Ray is 3-0 against EL Cholo.:happy
Leonard in the first fight is more representative of his normal style. He was normally a flat-footed fighter who boxed in a relaxed manner behind the jab, looking to open up with his combinations, particularly his great left hook. Problem is, it's hard when the guy is all over you. Leonard boxing on his toes and always moving, the way he did against Duran in Louisiana and against Hagler, were rare exceptions. Just shows his great versatility.
Still one of my favorite fighters of all times. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_HkdGHcNJs[/ame] Watch the feints and the foot work ....BEAUTIFUL!!!!
It was the crowd reception that bothered Duran too. It was the first time Duran ever heard fans cheer louder for his opponent. Then, Ray Charles singing the 'National Anthem' to a frenzied crowd. Only other time close up to that point, was in Madison Square Garden versus Puerto Rican, Esteban DeJesus. He lost that fight too.
I remember Duran saying it was stomach cramps the day after the fight but I believe he was humilated by SRL's "clowning around"
I think a lot of people forget that it was a close fight up until he quit. Duran had some early sucess but Leonard refused to trade with him as the rounds went on. Remember, Duran had fought well over 50 fights in Panama against guys who would stand and fight with him out of pride and to put food on their tables. Most of these guys werent flashy or movers. Leonard fought him in a way that people would boo if the fight was in Panama and he was Panamanian. Duran never had to fight a guy who fought like that. I think it was frustration more than anything.
No-one exept Duran knows for sure but Leonard frustrating him definitely holds more weight than any stomach cramp **** IMO.
