He ate a huge chimichanga just before the fight. It was, unfortunately, made with tainted meat. It caused intense stomach pains but Duran thought he could push on through and overcome the pain. Eventually he just couldn't continue.

Duran deserves a lot of credit for just getting into the ring that night. As he said in an interview months later "Yo no soy un superman ".

Many people after the fight claimed that the meat or soup was prepared by an old woman of Puerto Rican decent who's intense dislike for Duran was because of his mistreatment of past Puerto Rican opponents. It is the old superstition of do not eat the food of someone that you do not know. Brujeria, Voodoo in English.

While only 1 rd down, Duran had to go to the john so had to bid Leonard ADIEU. It is really just that simple. Touching cloth.

I always suspected a mob fix.
This has recently been confirmed with 100% certainty.
It was organized crime and Duran's gambling debts that led to the "No Mas" incident.

There will be a book coming out in 2021, hopefully in the first half of 2021. I've spoken with the author. It's legit. All I can say is that Duran owed money to some very heavy organized crime individuals and the deadline past. I'd heard rumours about it years ago and from what I've been told the researcher has discovered enough to say with 100% conviction this led to "No Mas".

This strikes me as the most plausible explanation.

I think Duran had a few different official excuses over the years.

And you're right about Arcel and Brown not buying the first batch of excuses.

For the record, Duran never said "No mas" in that ring that night. He said "No sigo" meaning (not literally) I'm not continuing, or I'm not carrying on. Basically "I'm done with this crap."

What strikes me kind of odd is that Roberto Duran faced many movers throughout his career, especially at lightweight, Lou Bizzaro and Vilomar Fernandez, maybe not the speed of Sugar Ray Leonard but he eventually caught up to them, Lou Bizzaro, TKO 14 in May 1976 and Vilomar Fernandez, January 1977, TKO 13. Yet with Leonard he got stomach cramps as he claimed or as some say got frustrated with Sugar Ray Leonard and quit, I do not buy that.

I think basically it was down to the fact Sugar Ray wasn’t going to play ball.
He was boxing Duran from the outside and clowning him at times, which Duran couldn’t handle.
A he man fight he could handle but not that ****, so he took his ball home.
Full credit to Leonard for reversing things from the first fight and getting inside Duran’s head.
