Duran’s one of my favourite fighters, it more niggles at me than plain condemning him for it.
In fairness he gets a pass from a lot of people for it, maybe if it was someone else we wouldn’t be so easy.

It was long ago. An aberration in a sterling career that just ads more intrigue. It has come to overshadow his REAL primetime rivalry vs Esteban DeJesus from his prime. A much longer and interesting rivalry from 72-78. No one talks about that and if you were there in the 70s it was one of the decades biggest stories..

Ray Arcel, said, "Nobody quits in my corner." when he heard Duran claimed heartburn, Ray said, "What heart, he ain't got a heart."

It was a combination of things and certainly not an upset stomach. He wasn't in top shape, he was getting beaten and it was getting worse as it went on, Leonard was showboating and making somewhat of a fol of him at times etc etc etc. Duran knew it wasn't going to be his night and took the easy way out, no if's or but's. How people personally judge him on it is up to them but out and out excuse making for a blatant quit doesn't really fly particularly when one looks at the dollars and prestige at stake.

I've always been confused why quite a few people/defenders go to lengths saying it was close. This isn't a good thing.

Some somehow try to make it Leonard's fault and hate on him for it. Given Duran went to absurd lengths trying to throw him off before the first fight. He would shout across the road in public at Leonard and his wife "i kill your husband, i kill your husband". Duran also had a spy watching Leonard's hotel and when she went out he would hurry to a waiting car, catch her up and tell her "i f.... you after i beat your husband".

Little wonder he fought in a rage and little wonder he played right into Duran's hands (of stone)

He totally psyched Leonard for the first fight and i have zero sympathy that Leonard not only embarrassed him in the rematch but also enjoyed it. Who wouldn't have after Duran's antics prior to the initial bout. They were immensely grubby but they also worked a treat as Duran obviously believed they would.

Duran came back after No Mas and redeemed himself over many years. Maybe money wasn't the only reason he fought on so long. He barely won a round against Benitez not much later and stuck to his task well. The Barkley fight is still hard to fathom. What an incredible effort from a simply incredible fighter.

It's funny, you can hardly criticism someone for fixating a bit on No Mas but you can also overlook people saying in the big scheme of things it barely matters.

    Such was Roberto Duran.

JT. Again brilliant stuff. It's so easy for many to down grade Leonard's victory in New Orleans
but make Duran's victory in Montreal legendary .(It was TBH) But the scapegoating of Leonard for
Duran quitting in New Orleans has always puzzled me.
Leonard only returned the favor of crass behavior Duran used to his advantage in Montreal.
Unlike Leonard , Duran actually committed one of the biggest mistakes/sins in
boxing history in New Orleans by quitting.
Duran did vindicate himself after New Orleans and added to his legend by his successes.
But for so many to hate Leonard because Duran quit has always been weird and more about personal dislikes from a certain group of fans than anything that actually happened
    in the ring.

Has nothing to do w why they dislike Leonard. They dislike him because he is a pmopous ass who after Montreal has to rigg fights to his advantage before he would compete. You know.
