For me boxers like Duran and Tyson and Golota are from the streets, they have instincts developed from that background that sometimes creep up in a controlled environment like boxing

Guys who swap punches for a living have brains wired differently than us civilized people, I dont think there is a distinct reason why he did it. Could be a combination of any of the things listed

Kind of one of those explainable things...why did Tyson bite Holyfield and why did Golota quit

one of those instinctual things, we will never know

Duran was at the top of the sporting world after he beat Leonard. He was the King of Panama and front page news all over the world for beating the new golden boy. He had just earned his first multi-million dollar payday. The world was his oyster. Then....

He enjoyed the sweet life for a few months, then had to give it up to start training and sweating and sacrificing and starving....He had to have been pissed as hell, didn't want to do it, etc.

He came into the fight lazy and grumpy and resentful, just wanted to get the thing over with and get back to the fun stuff. Then the clowning and showboating started and the anger, resentment and frustration just kicked in. We all know what happened next.

Of course, he did rebound. He was completely disgraced and, if nothing else, it brought the fire and determination back and he accomplished great things again.

I've always taken issue with this. Honestly, Duran always let himself go after a fight in a huge way. Would it have mattered if the rematch was scheduled 3 months or three years from that date if their first fight?

Roberto was always going to 'cram' in his training at the last second if you ask me.

As to the topic, my interpretation was that he was frustrated, a little embarrassed maybe and just not in the mood for any more of it. A spur-of-the-moment decision that would have far-reaching consequences that he never dreamed of.

It was reasonably close on the cards, but the momentum was always with Leonard. He had the initiative.

He didn't always let himself go between fights.... especially during the first 7 or 8 years of his career. Sometimes, yes. But not nearly as often as later.

He was partied-out, burned-out and getting out-hustled. It was great timing for the rematch. Duran had just received his largest check of his career and was now semi-famous in the US.

Buy, a loss is a loss is a loss. 90% of the game is 50% mental...

He had to poop really bad ... and he was wearing white trunks ... and Leonard kept punching him in the stomach.

I've heard that marathon runners have crapped all over themselves, down their legs and left a trail down the street, but I've never seen it happen in the ring.

Tennis players are allowed to leave the court to use the facilities.

Maybe Duran could've taken a crap in a bucket between rounds? (I've never seen that happen. Maybe they would've allowed it.)

    Whatever.

He's a human being. He had to poop. You can't call time out to run to the bathroom in the Superdome. That's about it.

So you're just going to drop this and leave? You can't tell us what he said?

I think he simply couldn't cope with Leonard showboating and making him look foolish. Leonard was a different animal the 2nd fight. Duran had made lewd and obscene remarks about Leonard's wife before the 1st fight and questioned Leonard's manhood which made Leonard go toe to toe and fight Duran'd fight.
The 2nd fight he used his boxing skills and speed on the outside and simply wasn't going to engage Leonard on the inside, ally that to him clowning and Duran just ended up extremely frustrated. He can identify with a head to head macho slugfest but he couldn't cope with that and being made to look foolish, he simply picked up his ball and went home.
Duran got inside Leonard's head 1st time around and all credit to Leonard he certainly got inside Duran's head 2nd time around.

I agree. I never bought the "he wasn't in shape" defense, either.

Duran looked in great shape for the rematch. During the build-up of the fight, he looked good. In training, he was sharp. Even in the ring that night, his physique looked solid.

Actually, he never looked that good physically in any fight ever again.

They weighed in the day of the fight back then. He ate a lot after the weigh-in. He ate something that disagreed with him.

If he didn't appear that his mind was totally focused during the bout, it's because he was trying to fight a difficult opponent and deal with girgling intestines ready to blow at any minute.

I think he regretted it the moment he quit. But, when you've got to go, sometimes that's all you can think about.

I knew a club fighter once who ate a bunch of KFC fried chicken for lunch on the day of the fight ... too much of it, in fact.

His stomach got upset in the hours leading up to the fight and he went and drank the better part of a bottle of Pepto Bismal. He got hit in the belly in the first round and managed to hold on, then threw up in the bucket between rounds -- and if you know pepto, it was all pink, so that's what came out.

He went on to win a 4-round decision.

getting hit to the body is proof Duran is ready to go?

Did Duran tell you himself he felt he needed to quit? I saw no evidence of this unlike in the Hearns fight, no sign of Duran being the least bit hurt so why would you tell others on this forum Duran KNEW?

or maybe you're 12 years old and thinking isn't for you. Does "thinking make Hulk's head hurt!" for you?

You hurt your credibility when you say things like that

How is that book? Did ray happen to mention the whuppin he took from Norris?

Does he still think Benitez is the hardest man to hit or has he changed his opinion since the Norris fight?
