Why did Ed "Too Tall" Jones quickly retire from boxing?

    Why did Ed "Too Tall" Jones quickly retire from boxing?

    With a 6-0 record, he appeared ready for Holmes, plus the rest of the early 80's hvywt champion "merry-go-round".

    Why?

    1 - He was terrible
    2 - He ended his holdout and resigned with the Cowboys.

    No way he could have competed with Holmes or any top 10 contender.

    He got nice publicity, though.

    "He got nice publicity, though." Next time I see Jones around Big D, I will tell him Saad54 says "hello". LOL

    That's cool if you actually know him

    I was raised in the Washington, DC suburbs so I respected "Too Tall." He put a hurting on Billy Kilmer, Joe Theisman, etc. twice a year for about 10 yrs.

    He was a great defensive end, just not a good Boxer.

    I used to work for the Clint Murchison Cos. in the real estate area. The Cowboy players used to drop by the Office ever so often back then to say hello. One time Staubach wanted a raise, but GM Gil Brandt wouldn't see him, so Staubach walked down a 3-ft wide ledge outside Brandt's 8th Floor window, knocked the glass, and was pointing at Brandt and saying "I want to see you". Brandt immediately let his All-Pro QB in his Office for salary discussions.

    Because Ed got his butt kicked on live TV in front of his Cowboy mates by a small Mexican
    boxer that he was supposed to dominate. He got the majority decision, but he stunk so bad
    and was OBVIOUSLY NOT someone with boxing potential that his career ended then and there.

    'butt kicked by a small Mexican boxer that he was supposed to dominate." The Dallas Morning News would not use the term 'small Mexican boxer" in print these days. Not PC enough. It would read: "Height challenged Undocumented Immigrant gingerly out-points 6'-7" local Dallas Cowboy hero."

    He played longer and at a higher level after his boxing foray than he did prior.

    I havent cked but at least one of his fight might have been a tank job, vs a Mexican Hw champ I believe in Washington, DC

    I don't know any of the particulars about his retirement but, from what I've read, EVERYONE'S posts here are being too harsh. I too thought it was a joke when he tried boxing but, from what I've read (correct me if I'm wrong or don't know everything about this) he grew up watching boxing with his dad and, with his athleticism, decided to give it a shot. I think he retired after that last tough fight against someone not near contender status because he knew he just didn't have it. As Nicholson said in "One Flew Over..." damn it at least I tried!"

    I'm at a loss as to why anyone would think that after only SIX fights and against complete scrubs, that Ed "Too Tall" Jones was somehow ready to face Larry Holmes.. I mean is this for comic relief?

    "Too Tall" was a Dallas Cowboy....which in Dallas in those days meant: "Bring on King Kong".
