Why did Eddie Hearn put Ritson in with Vasquez in the first place?

Obviously you didn't see that fight because he was robbed blind against Ohara as well.

Vazquez has been shafted globally numerous times now so it's obviously just a case of well you know it's happened before so we can get away with it again.

If I had to guess I'd say Ritson's team have told Eddie that he's ready for him and he's taken them at their word. From their performance in the corner they know less about boxing than Adalaide Byrd.

On paper Vazquez had the name recognition, was aging, had only been floored by 2 guys and any decent win against him would've been used to push him into a title fight where Eddie can recover some of the money sunk in to him.

Trigger warning in future mate before you mention the 'O' word.

I won't sleep tonight now what with the flashbacks and the involuntary muscle spasms. :(

Yeah I'm starting to get the feeling Hearn doesn't do enough research actually watching boxers

His two recent signings John Hedges and Aqib Fiaz looked awful last week.

Putting Lewis Ritson in with Miguel Vasquez, Ted Cheeseman in with Sergio Garcia and so on..

This is a fight that Ritson should have been winning had he been at the level most of us thought he was at. The win over Robbie Davies Jn was absolutely brilliant and Ritson showed in that performance that he was at least Euro level. These are the kind of fights you want your fighter to be having on his way to challenging for world titles...those former world champs long past their best who can teach him a few tricks but ultimately not have enough threat left to beat your fighter. This is exactly the kind of fight the likes of Catterall need before his inevitable title challenge.

So imo Hearn did exactly the right thing with this matchup. Sometimes it just goes against you and the true level of your fighter is exposed. Ritson can either work on his weaknesses (which I don’t think he can improve much) or Hearn can build some domestic rivalries for him and make some wedge out of him that way.

Obviously Covid-19 has put any plans of it happening on hold but the dream of Ritson challenging for a World Title in front of a packed St James's Park are pretty much over now, he's never going to better than Euro level. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that, it's still an achievement, I just get the feeling that Eddie Hearn was really hoping that with his Geordie following he can pack out St James's Park, this weekend shattered that dream with the performance and Laws also getting destroyed by Charlton.

Vazquez is a gentleman and doesn't care if he gets robbed. Someone like Mimoune was very unhappy about his robbery, Eddie puts those guys on his blacklist.

What's everyone moaning for , Ritson won the fight clearly and will get a World Title shot at St James' Park as planned.

Needs to improve his footwork. He's young enough he can improve drastically but needs to be prepared to work on his weaknesses now.

Otherwise he's just going to be stuck at his current level. Reminds me a bit of Eubank Jnr, looks a million dollars with the right opponent. Ideally one who will stand in front of him.

Perhaps he thought it was a zero risk fight with Spud O'Connor on duty?

    Turned out that way.

I can't see him adding sufficient skills. I think Macklin in commentary was saying he would always lose to this style of fighter. He's exciting against guys that will stand and trade with him, maybe finding more of the same is the best approach.

    Yes probably right.

He's just young enough in my view to improve his footwork. If be had better footwork, faster feet, he would improve dramatically imo.

At the moment he's one of those fighters who's lost if he can't set his feet to throw shots.

Every round he kept doing the same thing and was seemingly incapable of changing his approach, even though it wasn't working. By all accounts hes a nice fella and very tight with his team. I just wonder if he needs a new coach or at least spend some time getting some new thinking.

I know that there's a limit to what you can tell someone in between rounds but they seemed to be telling him how well he was doing and at one bizarre point they said how well he was doing considering how long he'd been out of the ring, it sounded like it was meant for our ears or the judges.

It's like the equivalent of Hearn throwing in Joshua Buatsi or Callum Johnson in with Isaac Chilemba. You can't look good against these spoiler types like Vasquez or Chilemba, and if you aren't good enough you lose. There was nothing to gain from it, terrible matchmaking.
