To which fight are you referring? You can have blood in your mouth from punches without being cut , this was pre- gumshields. The article states ."Johnson pulled his golden grin the teeth showing red." That is not a cut. There is no mention of Johnson being cut. This paper mentions Johnson's teeth were bleeding in the fourth round. http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&d=MEX19090625.2.40
Regarding the Willard fight here is a snippet from the NYTimes.... Havana April 5th. "Johnsons left eye was partly closed in the early rounds but not sufficient to interfere with his fighting. His lip was also cut inside and his famous golden smile flashed from a very red setting." Earlier reports did mention that his lip was cut in sparring. Willard more than likely reopened that cut.
Without a mouth guard blood from the mouth usually is caused by the teeth cutting the gum, lips or tongue after a punch is landed.
Actually its usually where the lips are forcibly pressed against the teeth ,and abrasions occur inside lips or on the the gums.I've experienced it a few times as most would have who have fought without a mouthpiece. You end up with a film of blood on your teeth but often no cuts.
Johnson revealed to the promoter Barney Curley that he had three teeth knocked out, his gold ones, he said he swallowed the teeth, and the blood so as not to give the crowd anything to crow about , and to "retrieve the gold teeth later", it's in "Unforgivable Blackness". I consider he losing fight against Willard possibly his most courageous performance.
I have also but invariably there is a cut and it could be an ultra small cut to produce what looks like lots of blood. The soft tissues of the mouth rip across the hard surface of the teeth when a punch lands or the teeth bite down on the lips, inner mouth and or tounge. Whether a cut or an abrasion Johnson was indeed bleeding from the mouth at least during round three when he fought Obrien. Johnson eye was party closed and his lip bleeding during his bout with Willard. The lip cut may or may not be the reopening of a cut he had gotten in training for the bout. No degradation to Johnson. He was fighting one of the greatest lt heavyweights in one bout and was in a 26 round bout with one big strong fighter in the other.
I'm not trying to split hairs and its entirely possible Johnson was cut in fights I never implied he was not ,as my posts prove. My issue is with the hater Mendoza.
There is a huge difference between understanding cuts, bloodied mouths and noses are common occurrences in boxing and another trying to degrade a past great champion because he was cut or bloodied.
Hmmm. So bloodied mouths are not necessarily the sole result of broken jaws? How about broken, or dislodged teeth? The plot thickens.
Correct. The poster McVey is a fool. A cut happens when the skin is broken, which happened to Johnson in several fights. Cuts back then were far more common thanks to the gloves, and no gum shields.
McVey showed his colors by following along with the most foul mouthed poster on these boards. I see through him like he is a ghost now. Very despicable person.
Of course you who have never boxed would be the person to comment on this. NOW SINCE YOU HAVE THE TIME TO WRITE ****,[ NO CHANGE THERE THEN,] PERHAPS YOU WILL ADDRESS THE CHALLENGE THAT I'VE SET YOU AND PROVIDE A SINGLE EXAMPLE OF MY LYING? I'M STILL WAITING .
Hey Lunatic. Why don't you spend some time answering those questions I've asked you on the other thread instead of pathetically trying to stir the **** on this one? Or are you as gutless as your new friend Mr Mendacity?
