It's not as if Manny left Bob, did he? Things that make you go hmmm. Kudos to Manny for not falling for the $40mill offer. He's $60mill better off because of it! :good
He was really forced in a corner, with Canelo and De La Hoya trying to take May the 2nd, Manny becoming vocal, fans getting sick of other fights. Mainly though he took it because there both just at the brink of being done and dusted, either one could take a loss next fight and all that revenue would just be gone. I think he would have been beaten by Khan and he would take that loss for **** all money and lose all his barganining power for a future Pacquio fight. I even think that Brook, Thurman and Porter would have a very good chance even though the first two are decent matches for Floyd, hes right at the end. The hype thats been gathering will be near peak levels he had to take it now thats why I ws fully confident for moths now that it would happen
Said it years ago these two would cash out against each other at the end of their careers. That, and Bob Arum actually kept his mouth shut this time, another indication the fight was happening. Notice nothing was being aired out in public? As soon as Arum said: "I don't know nothing..." I knew the fight was on. Arum is also cashing out on Pacquiao, who is at the end of his career. A loss to Mayweather means little at this point. Bob has already milked that cow. Both men are riding into the sunset with huge paydays. That's why it is happening now.
I really hate to complain but I really have to say it the way it is. You are right, not much has changed since the beginning of negotiations. Arum is still involved, there is no new stadium that I know of, there is probably going to be some form of random testing, Manny is not signed with TMT... So in the end both sides just wussed out when they were prime and wanted to shake the pockets of the fans as much as possible. Great sport.
I think fight was made weeks back. Noticed how Pac was pretty confident and so was Arum, and they kept saying sign the contract. Of course Floyd couldn't admit there was a contract because he wanted to announce it, and one of the stipulations was that he would be the one to announce it so was probably ****ed at Arum saying its nearly done and hence why Arum recently said "I know nothing". Floyd is an investor in "App Shots" app which is where he announced the fight, not Twitter, Superbowl or NBA which are much bigger stages. Floyd wanted to use the announcement of this fight as a marketing tool for a product he's invested in.
$120M paydays don't wait around for you forever. Everyone actually got lucky that Manny was able to rebound after the Marquez KO and keep the fight intact. I think the chances of one of them losing was growing with them being 36 and 38. Floyd did not look as good against Maidana as he did in his fights the prior year. And Manny has obviously lost either some of his power or his killer instinct. And at 38, Floyd can obviously see the end of the tunnel approaching with only a few fights left.
What a load of nonsense. It's happening now because both Mayweather and Pacquiao milked themselves to the very core fighting others and keeping fans hoping for them to fight. Now that there's no one worth considering(unless you're deluded enough to think Khan, Brook, Porter...etc have a shot) and the coast is clear, the fight is finally happening.
This fight will make money for everybody, but it's not going to make that kind of money. Expect it to do as much as the De La Hoya or Alvarez fights with Mayweather, but not much more. I think there's a peak point for just how much boxing matches can actually gross, which is constrained by the size of the audience. The boxing audience isn't going to double or triple over night no matter how good a fight they get or who's on the undercard.
Because there is a lot of money on the line and both Floyd and Pacquiao are above 35 years old. Pacquiao wouldn't agree to random blood testing in 2010. Mayweather wouldn't agree to give Pacquiao more than 40 M in 2011/12. For the interests of their pocketbooks and nothing to do with legacy, this was unfortunately probably the best case scenario for both (milk milk milk it).
The most obvious reason is that Les Moonves FORCED Floyd to take the fight after Guerrero and both Maidana fights flopped big time.
I just dont think that Floyd would be strong enough in the clinches, and thats the key for me. Brook is probably the strongest welterweight out there and while Floyd strength is often played down I still dont think he could hold off Porter. The strenght in Jab and right wouldnt be as heavy as Brook too.
