Why did Foreman take the loss to Jimmy Young so hard?

While I do agree with your post, still Jimmy Young could have ended up in the same condition. An athlete is always supposed to train his body for the unknown, while Young got his body used to the climate, George Foreman was running around scowling for the cameras, appearing in front of the cameras instead of getting his body used to the climate of Puerto Rico, his own fault. Ray Robinson is another story that is a valid point, however Sugar Ray always was in good shape for his bouts, the heat was intense that night in Yankee Stadium in 1952, even the referee collapsed. Foreman was running around pretending to be another Sonny Liston, we saw how Liston's lack of training cost him, let promoting of fights be left up to promoters, not the fighters, there was only one Muhammad Ali to do that.

That’s what I meant by give the ‘77 Foreman the brain (i.e., the maturity, the better ring savvy, the ability to plan and pace and adjust) of Foreman II and you got something fearsome to behold.

Jimmy Young also beat Muhammed Ali but was robbed on the score cards.

Ali could hang his head high for never getting dropped against Young.

What an achievement for Ali considering Jimmy only had 11 knockouts.

You’re missing the point like a bald headed cactus. It wasn’t about Ali.

For secular folks Big George mistaked heat stroke for an apparition.

Ali was in the twilight of his career and woefully out of shape for Young. George was in what should have been his prime.

Thanks for the visual. Just imagined a boxer throwing punches on his way to the ring with his corner carrying an air conditioner and an extra long extension cord from home Depot (the tag is still on there so they can return it).

"Smoke" was definitely involved in the writing of that post. Illegal smoke if you catch my drift.

    I think embarrassment partially.

Not sure if this is true but I heard he was allegedly told to carry Young as he was still ko'ing everyone. Then he wasn't prepared for Young's ability to cope and turn up. That combined with whatever religious revelation he had took all the fight out of him............for a decade anyway

I am the type of poster, no matter if I favor a fighter, if they lose, I don't believe in making excuses for them. On the night of April 30 1976 in Landover, Maryland televised live on ABC in prime time, I honestly thought that Muhammad Ali lost his title to Jimmy Young after 15 rounds. And to me Ali was the greatest but The truth be told. I think maybe what costs Young the decision and the title was that he kept sticking half of his body outside the ropes as Ali neared him, I think perhaps it swayed the judges opinions. I remember Howard Cosell reappearing on short breaks after the fight was over, there was doubt of the win for Ali, I could read it in Cosell's voice.

Hey Rich, I agree about Young slipping his head outside of the ropes made a great impression on the judges. After all Young did it in the 7th round, 8th round, 12th round , 13th round and 15th round.
Does that make up for the lowest volume of punches I have ever seen from Ali. Flat footed, Slow and unable to land. Even if you give Ali those rounds that's only 5 rounds. My score card 10 rounds to 5 rounds for Jimmy.
