It seems to me that they were both legitimate contenders for Dempsey's title. The color line wasnt an issue for Greb.... Why didn't it happen?
I've ondered this as well, I know why Greb did not fight Fulton and I've read that Greb asked to fight Wills saying the winnder should get Dempsey but I wonder who didnt want the fight, Greb or Wills....
I dont know about Greb Wills, but i have seen that Wills Tunney didnt happen, because Greb didnt want to risk his hard earned no 1 ranking and risk a shot at Dempsey. Tunney was prepared to take this fight. In fact, he preferred it to Tunney Godfrey which he outright refused, although i think this was more due to Godfrey's lesser ranking/Higher danger than any out and out ducking of Wills.
ESB, Just the question of this thread posed, speaks to all, the greatness of a 160 pound Harry Greb. Just ponder this , if years later a post thread asked the question " ,why didn't Marvin Hagler never fight Larry Holmes or Michael Spinks ? The question of this thread,is alone a great compliment to a 160 pound middleweight, named Harry Greb...
Correct. Tunney was ready to meet Willis. Willis declined. In fact Wills declined to meet Godfrey multiple times. Never heard of a potential Greb vs. Wills match.
