Why did Haney fight as the aggressor vs a stronger puncher?

Feels like Haney made the same mistake Ryan made vs Tank being the aggressor trying to stalk his opponent who mostly lands big counter punches. Why didn't he just fight like Shakur and run all night to keep his perfect record even if it'd be a boring fight?

    Ego.

Haney has everyone around praising his "skills" and he let it go to his head.

Haney’s lack of power and an average chin will always be his weakness. Also when he loses that huge size advantage. There is a reason he has drained himself to these weights.

Haney doesn't really have the skills to run like Shakur did. Also, Haney has a fighter's heart.

It was his best chance at winning. Moving backwards would have gotten him stopped more easily.

Because he knew everytime he would land a straight right going forward, it would put him into position to hold on for dear life.

He tried to Hopkins (throw the right then grab hold) a bigger, faster opponent who can punch. He thought going forward was safest to neutralize Ryan and it ended up backfiring.
