Because Hopkins saw a fighter that he certainly felt sorry for, Hopkins must've respected Pavlik as a person.

I agree especially the second part...he had such an easy time with him he wanted to make sure he stayed mentally strong and won a few more title fights so he would look better....and he is a good guy ...i don't care if it was patronizing he could have **** all over him after that prformance...classy

Hopkins said some encouraging things to a man he'd just defeated soundly. Pavlik probably appreciated it. His trainer, Jack Loew, has an aggressive attitude, but I think Pavlik himself took to it.

I simply saw it as one fighter talking to another about what they both found out about each other by fighting. Some call it a reality check, it happens to all of us.

I can't decide whether it's because he is a nice person, or it's because he is a patronising arrogant arse.

Pavlik was mastered in every way. One is supposed to hold such fights against the losing fighter.

Because Hopkins is a class act and a true Champon. He has an awareness and appreciation of and for his own stature. He intentionally set an example. Class dismissed.

Think you're on to somethin', S. Sure, the bluntness of your indictment runs counter to the Wheaties-box fiction we were raised on (and I wanna dismiss it outta hand); and like others on this thread, I thought Bernard's post-fight encouragement to Kelly was stand-up.

But, wait a minute: I've been around B-Hop enough to know better; he's all three-card monty -- distraction -- a chameleon, a master schemer.

You don't survive in the jungle long as he has without being two jumps ahead of the enemy.

If B-hop gets his hooks into Kelly for Golden Boy, you'll deserve props for cuttin' through the BS.

Not only that, Bernard is REALLY thinking about training Pavlik. He saw both the serious D-holes is Kelly's game as well as his talent and probably felt there's room for progression. And Hopkins really is a good guy. One of a kind, a bit egoistic who clearly thinks he's an iconinc (black) figure of his generation, most of the time he's speaking honestly, although he doesn't like any opinion different to his and he looks like a stubborn guy with a heart.

He really cares about the middleweight legacy, who'd follow his footsteps, remember he wanted Taylor to dominate 160 and now he wants to help Pavlik do the same. IMO if you receive advice from BHop, you should take it, I know everybody understands what did he mean by 'you need to learn how to fight like a black fighter', and it's pretty clear that he doesn't think the current trainer is good for the necessarily progression.

Just out of interest, what was Hopkins doing when he grabbed the ref by the neck at the end of the fight? Were they still fighting and was it a joke? Just asking as still have not seen the fight but the pic is in this months Boxig Digest...any views?
