Why did it take so long for Terence Crawford to finally be a bigger boxing star?

Get a grip you lying piece of ****. Go check his post fight interview after he beat Porter, Spence himself publicly acknowledged he wasn’t interested in fighting Crawford before he fought every single PBC welterweight.

I disagree with this. Mike Tyson was earning more than Mayweather and had significantly bigger star power in the 1980s; however, he lacked the mentality outside the ring to be prudent with his wealth. Sugar Ray Leonard made around $90 million in the 1980s, too, which is close to $400 million when adjusted for inflation.

One thing Mayweather was remarkably good at was parading his zero as some sort of badge of honour, which is something casual fans still to this day associate with him, when many people who know the sport know that he lost to Castillo in that first fight, and then went on to avenge it. A lot of smoke and mirrors with Floyd, but one of the great businessmen of the sport, no doubt.

I kind of see what you’re saying here but when you say ‘You can never quite predict which side the coin will land on’ I think with certain individuals in sport, it doesn’t really matter.
Celebrity and sport are synonymous in most cases at elite level but some sportsmen and women have no desire to be involved with the fame game any more than they have to be.
Every aspect of Crawfords existence is telling in itself, that he wants no part of that fame anymore than he needs to.
He lives in the same town, his wife isn’t a super model, he isn’t flashy, he’s got the same team he’s had since day one, he doesn’t get into slanging with opponents, in the gym he put the work into training in switch when his team were telling him he was wasting his time, he stayed focused and pursued his legacy rather than chasing the money.
He is part of a rare group of fighters that have prioritised legacy over money, I’m not talking about historically but active fighters, that group are all under paid apart from one, Crawford, Bivol, Beterbiev, usyk is the exception of these guys.
There’s a lot wrong with boxing but it’s criminal that someone like Ryan Garcia can earn more than fighters like that (apart from usyk), for me a super star in boxing is not what it once was, in previous generations fighters transcended the sport. The rise of mixed martial arts and in particular UFC has normalised the brash, arrogant and classless personality in boxing, I’m not blaming MMA or UFC but it hasn’t helped, you have fighters like tank who have no shame in admitting that they are only interested in the money.
Crawford hasn’t become a star because he has no interest in being a star, and the way that people are defining what is a boxing star is completely ridiculous, a fighter who is known by a wide range of people is a star, the opinion or the recognition of people who have no idea about boxing is what makes him a star.
The real boxing stars are the likes of Sergiy Derevyanchenko, who will fight anyone and everyone and never complain about the result, who gives everything and remain humble, boxing stars are defined by what it is to be a boxer, integrity, respect, discipline, dedication, determination and humility, so let’s not forget that.
Bud is a boxing star in the truest sense because he doesn’t chase fame, he is just a boxer, he is a special fighter, I saw him tag canelo more than once with rear hand doubles and triples from switch stance and then move out of range as canelo returned overhands and caught fresh air.
With Crawford he will always be more famous than he wants to be.
A star in boxing should be defined by your peers and your achievements not by how many non boxing people know your name.

He doesn’t have a personality, he’s also not so unlikable that people tune in hoping he loses, but not so likeable that he has a large following.

Mayweather may not have had a personality, but he was unlikable so people tuned in hoping to see him get beat.

Till he fights and sells he ain't a big star
