For some reason he seemed to have a brief Indian summer before losing to Bruno, beat a prime James Tillis and Greg Page at 36 and 37, did he change trainers, or improve technically or something? Looking at the boxrec, it looks rather confusing given I’d assume most would’ve picked both of those over even a prime Bugner had he not beat them. What is the reason for his brief Indian summer?
Bugner won decisions over the aforementioned Tillis, Page and David Bey, none of whom were near their prime but still respectable gatekeepers at the time. All in all, respectable wins - perhaps Joe was inspired fighting in his adopted new country and put some effort in. He looked ok in the Bey fight for a 37 yr old
I think the 80s was the most up and down decade we've ever had when it comes to the heavyweights. Guys who were once at the top would go on to lose matches to guys like the aforementioned Bugner, Hipp, and otherwise. I just think that certain guys never recovered after certain losses. Bey looked pretty damn good against versions of Page and Holmes, not to mention knocking out an early Buster Douglas in his first bout, but seemed to go downhill after his loss to Berbick. Drops decisions to Smith and Bugner, then gets stopped against the up and coming Biggs while Bey himself was ahead, before getting knocked out against Du Plooy. It just blows to see all these potentials get to put to waste.
