I have alot of respect for John Duddy for retiring from the game when he was on verge of a world title shot. He, like all boxers sacrifice and he was so close. Wonder what he is doing now?
I think he just saw it was a dirty business and got out. He would walk away with a small fraction of "his purse" once the promoters took off tax (normally of the top line-state and IRS-about 30%) then manager`s %`s of the remainder (managers tend to take 33.33% in the States, then trainer(10%ish) then cornermen and others (maybe S and C coach back at the gym), Then sparring partners if its for a big fight.... before long the purse is shrunk to very little. Boxers get shafted in the business, even the top ones. Its the TV companies, the promoters and the top coaches who laugh all the way to the bank!
How can you loose respect for a man who always came to fight and left everything in the ring. A boxing ring is no place to be unless your 100% committed, a fighter is the first to know when his time is up. I wish John all the best in the future and I'm happy he left the sport with his health intact.
