Why Did Margarito Last So Much Longer Than Paul Williams When Both Fight Similarly?

Based upon the Lara fight, Paul Williams seems already halfway retired. He has slowed considerably, and may have lost his confidence or will for the sport after the Martinez KO loss.

On the other hand, Antonio Margarito -- whom Paul Williams beat in an entertaining slugfest -- is still going pretty strong, even after around 18 years as a professional. Margarito has slowed, to be sure, but he still comes to win and seems to have more pep in his performances than Williams does recently, particularly against Lara.

Paul Williams is 29 years old. Margarito is 33 years old. Paul Williams turned pro in 2000, at the age of 18. Margarito turned pro in 1994, at the age of 15.

Williams has been fighting for 12 years as a pro. Margarito has been fighting for 18 years as a pro.

Williams has 42 professional fights. Margarito has 45 professional fights.

Each man uses a high-volume, swarming attack. Each man is more than happy to take several shots to launch their own attack. Each man is durable, having been stopped just once in their careers.

Given all the data and similarities, why do you think that Margarito seems to have kept his "fire," perhaps, longer than Williams has? Is it just love of the sport? Is it based on need, because Margarito feels he needs the money more than Williams?

    What do you think? :bbb

Its level of competition, Margarito looked poor in his last 3, Williams would have looked better against Mosley, Garcia, Pacquaio and may well have beaten all 3, Margarito barely scraped a round against Pac/Mosley. Margarito wouldn't look any better against Lara or in a Martinez rematch

That's not a bad point. I do think Margo had some TJ Tomato Cans served up to him earlier in his career. But, then again, he was like 15-17 years old.

    Margarito has/had superhuman durability.

Both guys have the kind of mentality that they need protected from themselves. Both warriors, both willing to sacrifice.

Personally, I think Margarito is making a mistake coming back. They've each taken some beatings, but Margs first against Mosley and then Pacquiao were cringe worthy.

I guarantee Margarito has lasting effects and pain from the Pacquiao fight. But his stubbornness and mentality won't let him admit to it.

Another excellent point. Margo never looked more jacked (remember the abs in the build-up) than when he fought Pacquiao.

He still has the desire. That seems clear. Williams just may have lost his, for whatever reason.

    :thumbsup

Excellent point by you, Pound and Deaman, Relentless. That almost-invincible skull Margo possesses probably has seriously helped his longevity.

The shots Mosley landed on him, one after another, would have put many people in a coma. I could not believe the punishment Margo took in that fight.

Paul Williams has always fought like this, and has always got punched alot if the face. He threw 1000 ounches against Lara like he does in all his fights. I think think hes shot or has slowed down at all. He been a sucker for a left hook since Quintana so hes been getting hit with the same punch like always.

    same Paul Willams as always

By that logic ******* Sergio Martinez is a tomato can eh :patsch

Margo did beat Sergio Martinez early in their careers.

Fair point. He may have just lost some speed and timing, then.

completely agree..i just dont see how margarito can be come back from the beating he took from manny...if manny did not lay off in the 11th and 12th rds margarito would have been permanently injured and taken out on a stretcher..there's no way the type of injuries he suffered in that fight that makes me believe he'll be anywhere near 100% again physically or neurologically...margarito is done as a fighter

Paul Williams got an obvious severe concussion against Martinez.
