Why Did Margarito Last So Much Longer Than Paul Williams When Both Fight Similarly?

I like Margo, and am not trying to diss him in any way. Still, Martinez was hardly Margo's first fight.

All fighters are built up, nobody starts out against the world champ. I'm sure Williams fought his share of nobodies as well.

But he did come back from the absurd Mosley beating, which was incredible.

At some point, his body wont be able to do it any longer. Maybe that happens against Cotto in the rematch.

Probably so. A KO like that could have lasting effects, including physical ones. Hopefully Paul will be ok as he ages, and not have any problems. He seems like a good guy.

Haha well it does in some cases. PW can retire today get a job at Walmart get fired and collect unemployment.
Margarito retires today gets a job at Soriana gets fired and he has no income.

Therefore the guys who have a slim chance of getting income after fighting are gonna make the most of it.
The other guy when he is on the brink of going down has it easier. He can always say to himself well there is always unemployment...

It's a good point, and one which I think has a lot to do with who does and does not do well in sports. :good

Williams has invested and saved his money, according to reports. Margarito may feel more desperation to earn money than Williams.

Williams isn't as strong, Not as good as chin.

Margarito has a great chin. Just look at his face as a whole. Its made for boxing.

Margarito didn't last much longer, he was 30 when got beaten to a shot to **** fighter by Mosley.

But his body structure allowed him to take more punishment up to that point, Tony is powerfully built and bulks up come fight night so the impact of the punches pre-Mosley/Cotto never seemed serious, compare that to any flush shot that sent Paul's head flying. Margarito's shorter neck, more compact, powerful upper body and legs helped absorbing the energy while Williams' head took 90% of it, huge difference.

Also Margarito got hit many times back in the day, but his come forward style cut the space and pace off opponents punches so he was rarely his as flush and powerful as a Quintana or Martinez found a prime Williams' head. Watch some old Margo fights, he managed his defense quite well.

EXACTLY!! Nice to see somebody recognizes the central importance of punch resistance in this game.

williams is good on the financial tip which is always good to hear..but i heard margarito has some financial issues so i guess being a punching bag to the top fighters will be his way out but at what price

one day a fighter just wakes up old.

margo is done. three wars/beatdowns(cotto/mosely/paq) will do that to you. look at his punch output against paq. he had only two rounds where he threw over 50 punches. his next fight will even be worse. not good for a pressure fighter that can no longer pressure.

cotto could have one or two more fights left in him. also, es would not have taken him on if he believed cotto was completely finished.

williams to me still has the most left as he still threw 1000 punches and could still take a shot as lara hit him with everthing he had but still could not put him down or away. failing to pull the trigger is one of the telling signs when a fighter is shot. thats something we did not see against lara.

pw gets es in his corner and he may pull of the upset. he just needs to avoid the left, something that is entirely rectifiable.

I watched the Lara fight this weekend and peeked into my boxing collection and watched Cintron vs Margarito II

This was the best i think i ever saw margarito and against a very good opponent

watching margarito vs mosley and against pacquiao he seemed slow and slugish and less aggressive

vs mosley it was clear he was just never in the fight probably what occured in the dressing room killed his focus

vs pac the lay off and being at a higher weight he seemed slower not to mention his eye shut in the 3rd or 4th round

he has obviously slowed, but cotto has also slipped a lot too

i think at their best margarito wins every time but now its up in the air

as for williams hes fought the same his whole career doesnt use height easy to hit doesnt sit on his shots

its just a select few have used the right movement and countering

williams is in for some trouble as the blueprint is out there and he is pursuing big fights
