Moorer slipped up against Castillo but then had a great win over Jirov and then took a year off but came back and had a nice little win streak going before calling it a day.

Why did he not keep that momentum going and try to land one last title shot? I don’t recall hearing about any career ending injury or anything like that. He obviously had something left in the tank given the Jirov result.

Surely with his name recognition he could have worked his way into a title shot for one last big payday, so why didn’t he go for it?

Probably the lack of heart and getting old.

I never got the feeling that MM liked boxing so much as he did it because he was good at it and could make money doing it.

    Sometimes that’s not enough.

We’ve gotten too used to guys fighting until they’re ancient and going out in a multiple loss streak. I actually wish more fighters would end their careers the way MM did. Not ancient, in good health and on a winning note

I thought Atlas convinced him to retire during an espn broadcast or something.

He was pretty much done for. He was clearly outboxed by Castillo and was behind against Jirov from what I recall when he caught him with a left hand late in the fight. I remember he was coming in pretty heavy late in his career and wasn't throwing the combinations like he did early in his career.

I just remember that they were calling out Klitschko and saying he was almost ready when he had this big, unsightly spare tire around the middle and I was thinking "this is going nowhere." And then he just sort of faded out.

I agree with this, but what I don’t understand is why not have the Jirov fight be your swan song if you are Moorer? Why continue for some time after, having success and building momentum only to not see it through and see what happens?

I’m not Michael, but I know that I personally would always look back at my record and be left wondering what if.

Yes Moorer went on for another 6 more years after but never came close to being championship fighter.

Yeah, but this comeback was after that Tua fight. He was kinda on a roll there in the last part of his career.

I don't know if I call it a roll his opponents were journeymen and not ranked contenders.

Course, you fellas are right. Was getting my dates mixed!
Moorer did well to come back after that tbh.

He did quit after Jirov. His next fight was two years later to the day, the first of five fights on his final comeback tour before he really retired.

So maybe after sitting around for a bit after ending on that note, he probably did have the thoughts you just described: “If I don’t fight again, I’ll never know. And I’m not getting any younger, so might as well give it a try.”
