Why did Monzon not face Valdez in 1974?

After he beat Jose Angel Napoles, Monzon was stripped of his WBC title for failure to face Rodrigo Valdez. Why didn't he and Valdez fight in 74?

I remember the WBA (Monzon) and the WBC (Valdez) being at "war" with each other back then and stripping belts from champs for little reason (more sanctioning fees?).

Also, looks like Monzon continued to fight the better challengers than
    Valdez did.

Maybe Monzon said: "I don't need him".

My information is because the WBC told him to, Monzon rarely did what he was told.

Monzon was already in hot water with the WBC for refusing to do the mandatory urine sample after the Napoles fight, for which he was fined by the WBC to the tune of $10,000, thus being told to fight Valdez was the final straw for Monzon.

Monzon was thinking of retiring after the fight with Napoles and the WBC wouldn't wait for his decision, so being the law-abiding organisation they always were decided the title would be vacant. They were initially going to strip Monzon for taking the Napoles fight, the WBA said something similar if Carlos didn't fight Tony Mundine.

PS. Many people forget that they also stripped Hagler in late 84 for a month. Due to a row over the 15-round limit. Of course, they had no qualms in sanctioning Tyson-Biggs 15-rounder.

Wasn't Evander Holyfield going to be stripped for something like that too in his second fight with Qawi?

So when Monzon fought Valdez for the 2nd time in Monzon's last fight, what version of Valdez was this compared to the time you's are referring to?
Was he as good then as previously?
This is due to i have seen most of the 2nd fight.

It's fair to say that BOTH of their better days were behind them when they finally fought.

Another fight that, regrettably, never took place at the same time due to the WBA/WBC BS was the Galindez (WBA) and Conteh (WBC) Lt. Heavy unification bout. A mid-75 scrap between these two would have been a gem! Most folks can only remember Victor & John later in their careers after Victor had been in too many wars and John had endured multiple hand fractures...

Heaven's to betsy Robot! I'll let some of the other posters
clue you in to Galindez & Conteh. One of the greatest fights
    ever that never took place!

Didn't Bob Foster have to go through some crap with one of the organizations concerning Vicente Rondon?

If my memory is correct, the WBA stripped Foster after he moved up to face Joe Frazier instead of a mandatory defense, and set up Rondon vs. a high contender for the vacant WBA belt. Of course we all know what happened when Bob & Vincente finally settled things in the ring.

After his 1974 draw with Jorge Ahumada, Foster either was stripped again by both bodies (I think for dragging his feet on a Galindez defense) or semi-retired which set up dual "title" fights that year.
WBC: John Conteh vs. Jorge Ahumada (London) Conteh UD 15
WBA: Victor Galindez vs. Len "the stinger" Hutchins (Argentina) Galindez TKO 13.

Foster was pretty p.o.'ed at Rondon in their fight and decided to beat the sh*t out of him just for general principles. Check at that fight:

By the time he fought Ahumada he was really at the end of the line.
A draw was generous IMO ( I saw the fight closed circuit I think)

I saw it closed circuit in Indy too. The opening bout was the second Frazier-Quarry from MSG followed by Foster-Ahumada from Albuquerque. From what I remember a listless Foster let the bull-dozing Ahumada (he was a tough SOB-think Yaqui Lopez in that both of them were talented enough to be champs but never were) mount a body and occasional head attack to build an early lead; Foster came back with that lightning jab and some good countering late in the fight to salvage a draw. I remember Jorge saying something like "a draw in Albuquerque is like a win!"

I remember MdwC mentioned this - Monzon offered Valdez to fight in Argentina but as article says Valdez chose to fight Briscoe instead:

    http://news.google.com/newspapers?n...a1VAAAAIBAJ&sjid=OeADAAAAIBAJ&pg=5357,5322874

I'm interested in knowing more about this whole situation.

What was public opinion on Monzon being stripped?

Why it took 2 years to finally arrange the fight?

Maybe some contemporary reports, Senor Pepe?
