It's not so hard to see that barrera is levels above hammed. Because, yes, as people have already said, there are levels in this sport. PS: the funniest part of the fight is when hammed realizes that he's the worst fighter and tries to play dirty. And barrera shows him that he has no clue about how to play dirty neither, and "german suplex"s him.
He got way to arrogant with his allah and Muslim praise. Started thinking he was a god or something. That **** was ridiculous
He would have always lost my but wasn't in tip shape and his hands were ****ed by then. His last fight was euro champ Calvo for the IBO. He went out and boxed and got booed to ****. Better to burn out than fade away
Naz naybe no ATG but a British atg for sure. Shoukd have been a unified champ, probably best resume outside froch/lewis
It's crazy how disrespected MAB is even to this day in regards to this fight. So many people still with excuses and total disregard for the technical skill disparity between the two. Naz was a supremely talented boxer, but he was an absolute technical trainwreck and cared more about putting on a show and looking good than he did honing his craft and becoming a better fighter. As fighters grow up and develop, their trainers have a big influence in their style as do the fighters idols, but every fighter primarily develops their own style in conjunction to their natural gifts and weaknesses. Guys that are extraordinarily fast or powerful usually always end up with the greatest technical deficiencies because they are so gifted in those attributes that they never need to develop and master a lot of skills, they are so gifted that they can still walk through their competition. They also usually have some of the worst training habits because they don't need to train anywhere near as hard as other fighters. With Hamed's talent, he was always going to become the fighter he became, just like MAB. Talent only gets you so far though. When Hamed finally got onto upper echelon of the world-class stage he was too deficient in too many areas to ever really be competitive. MAB is an ATG who busted his ass his entire life and career to become the fighter he became and leave the legacy he left. Naz was never gonna beat MAB.
a high school friend of mine took poisons title on worldwide broadcast. one of the biggest sports highlight of my life. my biggest brush with a world champion athlete was getting drunk and high together entire weekends for a couple years.
I don't think it did just suddenly happen. It was already showing in prior fights for soem time, he was getting lazy and reckless. Still clearly beating / KO'ing people because his skill and power level were too much (just look at the Augie Sanchez fight as one example). But that B/C level Naz wouldn't work against Barrera. Don't get me wrong, I have no doubt that Barrera could have won if Naz was still "prime" and fully focused. It's a 52/48 call. The GGG comparison is not valid. Barrera clearly beat Naz, no one argues that. Not so with GGG/Canelo. I had GGG beating Canelo without question in fight 1. I also had him sneaking fight 2, but admit that was much closer to call.
Exactly. Naz wasn't old but he was past his prime in performance terms. I think a combination of things stopped him from fully realising his talent. His own arrogance sure, but also the many easy fights he took coining it in beating second rate guys at British and Euro level. It fed his arrogance, it dulled his appetite. He had too many people telling him how great he was and not enough keeping his feet on the ground and encouraging him to keep improving. Classic pride comes before a fall story. As you say he may still have lost against the excellent MAB, but the question for me will always be how good he may have been if his talent had been better focused and he hadn't got complacent.
Agree with all of this. He certainly wasn't an "old" past his prime. Still physically good and not a lot of wars. Bottom line, Barrera stayed hungry and Naz didn't, so really there are no excuses. Staying in the zone and keeping at a certain level over the years are part and parcel of competitive sport.
Also, not the "old" that Barrera was when he fought Khan. Even then (although he struggled with the speed) he buzzed Khan at one point, was never hurt and only got stopped on a horrific head clash (should have been called a NC in my view). That was in my hometown of Manchester, and I saw Barrera couple days before at a press thing. Should add I am also a big Barrera fan as well. Like all those guys at that weight at that golden time (Morales etc)
