Imagine him vs prime hearns would be the two biggest welters together in a ring. Hearns ko him mid rounds no trouble
this, those sparring losses really derailed PW. way too sad, what happened,. man that sucked and will suck forever
Mayweather could have fought him, but he was too dangerous. He probably would have beaten Mayweather with his height, reach, and style advantages. Pacquiao and him were never in the same weight classes and he was a middleweight by the time Pacquiao eventually moved up to welterweight. I'm not sure why Cotto or Mosley didn't fight him. Probably why it was so hard to make the Mosley vs Winky Wright fight happen, money. Shame Paul Williams had that accident. When I think of this last decade of boxing I tend to compare it to the 80s. Pacquiao is Duran, Mayweather is Leonard, Martinez is Hagler, and Wiliams is like Hearns.
Sergio Martinez fought Williams two times, the first time Martinez was badly robbed, in the rematch Martinez knocked Williams out cold in the second round. Ishida lost to Williams by Dec., Golovkin knocked Ishida out in the 3rd round, through the ropes and out cold. Void ran from Williams, Void was afraid of him, just like he is afraid of Pac.............
Closest thing we'll get to a Henry Armstrong I think. Stylistically a nightmare for May weather. I truly think he just had an off night with Quintana I because he nearly killed El Indio in the rematch. Destroyed Quintana in one round to prove it was a fluke. Volume puncher with iron chin and high work rate? Nightmare for anyone. Williams was the definition of a true warrior. Know what am sayin?
Extremely high risk and low reward. Just look at his in-ring ability. The man was a beast, literally. He had freakish height and reach for a 147 and 154lber, freakish stamina, freakish activity, solid chin, serious power and had skills to box when necessary. Far too much risk there for the reward he provided to the big names in the sport. Williams' main problem was his promoter Dan Goossen, nothing else really. He could have done A LOT better if he was with TOP RANK or Golden Boy and far more people would be discussing him. He beat Concreto back when Concreto was being heavily hyped by Arum yet how many people gave a damn?, very few knew or even cared about that fight to the point where Concreto immediately moved on to get a major payday against one of the biggest and hottest stars in the sport at the time, undefeated Miguel Cotto. Not to forget the many other paydays that followed for Concreto while Williams remained in the dark unknown. It was sad enough to see Williams move up and down in weight for different fights so many times yet very few people even knew what was his primary weight. Same thing is happening to Andre Ward at the moment, he wins the super six yet the majority are paying more attention to Froch, Chavez Jr. and others. Hell even GGG is getting more hype and attention than Ward. The Williams story pretty much proves that having freakish ability and desire to fight everyone isn't enough in the sport if you don't have the right manager and promoter.
