Because it has nothing to do with the subjective "who is better" -- it has to do with who draws.

Record companies don't say, "So-and-so is a better musician than Justin Bieber, even though not as many people buy his music and only a fraction attend his concerts, so let's pay him twice as much as Justin."

There are tons of movie stars who aren't as good as others at pure acting, but having them in a movie guarantees box office.

This is about box office.

De la Hoya was the biggest draw in boxing at the time, so the pie was bigger and thus Manny's slice was larger. Barrera was an attraction ... but Oscar was a star -- his fights generated more income for himself, and thus for his opponent.

It's really not that difficult to understand.
