I think he was overly confident in his ablity to land on Vitali as he did Wlad.

He did land on Vitali, but didn't get the same results, obviously.

I was amazed that Sanders didn't put more effort and discipline into training, seeing as how he'd reached this level. I was also amazed he never fell, when Vitali was hammering him. He was out on his feet, and *ready to go, Jim*, and had it went much longer, he would have been on the concrete floor.

What I never understood is why Wlad fought Chris Byrd a second time. Shouldnt have Vitali tried to get that fight just to prove a point and shut up a few people hating on his loss. What was the point for Wlad to destroy him all over again. Vitali should have tried to make it and its pretty predictable he would have won.

You need a combination of speed, power and aggressiveness to give Wlad problems. Sanders had it and Wlad tasted and knew that Sanders was his kryptonite.

You do realize that Sanders is a southpaw right?

and one of the fastest, deadliest straight lefts the hwt division has ever seen. Lennox Lewis didn't call him "the Sniper" for nothing.

He was counter punched. WK got too careless and got counter punched - WK was chasing Sanders around the ring at the beginning.

check out how VK fought Sanders. Well aware of the straight left. WK would approach in a similar way in the rematch.

I was very surprised. Already against Wlad, although 225, he didn't look very good - but at this point it was OK, as he was substitute opponent (and semi-retired on top of that). I expected him to get into better shape against Vitali, but it turned out the opposite way. It's a pity, and one may only wander "what if" since even out of shape Sanders gave Vitali some problems.

VK was apparently so aware of this straight left he almost sat on his ass in the 1st round and took it quite often even in later rounds. The main difference between Vitali and Wlad against Sanders was the chin - Vitali had it, Wlad didn't. None of them fought good (from strategic point of view) fight against tall southpaw like Sanders.

My point is, you need a different tactic vs a southpaw. The jab isn't used the same way.

There was a rematch claus. Actually Sanders was tied for his next four fights by Universum who at the time managed Wlad.

Universum knew sanders had wlads number, and kept him away from another brutal beating.
Sanders would have loved another fight with Wlad, but no way Kohl had the balls to do that.

Edit: It looks like I actually was mistaken. Here's an excerpt of an article that goes into it, published shortly after Wlad-Sanders, but before Vitali-Sanders and before Wlad had any other fights following the loss. By the time Sanders had fought Vitali, Wlad had just been stopped by Brewster.

"Corrie Sanders will be allowed one voluntary defence of the WBO heavyweight title he so easily wrenched from Wladimir Klitschko’s grasp before he is contractually obligated to fight the 1996 Olympic champion once again.

Klitschko, who will travel to the US tomorrow with brother Vitali, wants immediate revenge, but cooler heads at the Hamburg headquarters of Universum Box Promotions are considering an interim fight against the likes a Fres Oquendo, John Ruiz or - surprisingly – the heavy-handed David Tua.

It was a massive shock and we are all upset, said Universum’s head of Communication Dr Chris Rybarczyk. It was no lucky punch and Wladimir accepted that, but he is anxious to prove it was an accident that won’t happen again. We think Wladimir should take three months off – completely – before starting back in the gym.

Then we’ll decide how to go about proving that Wladimir Klitschko is still a future heavyweight champion of the world."

Well, watch it again and then you will notice a clear difference in how VK approaches sanders and how did brother did it. Sanders tagged VK a couple of times, but he would tagged probably anyone given his hand speed.

If I was Wlad I would have ran a mile from Sanders. Some fighters just happen to be kryptonite to certain other fighters
