That would be a great gimmick in professional wrestling.

I doubt McCall could beat Lewis 98 times out of a hundred, but you have to admit his one win was memorable.

Lewis had eaten onions prior to the fight and belched in his face

    HATE when that happens.

Being fresh out of rehab can make big events seem even bigger and more desperate. He might have been basing his whole abstinence on that fight.

This is speculation: he could see he was being outclassed and WAY out-smoothed early on, ate some sickeningly terrible right hands, and freaked.

I’ve got news for you. McCall cried coming out for the first Lewis fight too, but he won that one. No excuses. What he did worked for the first fight but not the second. Lewis had improved under Steward’s tutelage and fought a smarter fight.

Because he was not in the right mental condition to fight that night. He had been removed form a nut ward not too long before the fight.

It wasn't because of anything great Lewis was doing as some have said in attempts at revisionism.

Oliver McCall was arrested in July 1996 and went into rehab.

He was out of rehab and would have been, presumably, fit to fight had he not, in December, gotten himself arrested again for throwing a Christmas tree in a hotel lobby and spat on a police car, resulting in another arrest. He went back to rehab.

The fight was in February 1997. By April 1997, he was in a mental institution after his wife had him committed for some sort of domestic situations, and evaluated. The person who evaluated him said he was mentally ill and in need of hospitalization.

So, no, he should not have been fighting. A reasonable substitute should have been brought in since he obviously wasn’t going to be fit to fight anytime soon and the WBC belt shouldn’t have been held up in hopes that he one day would be (it was vacant, so not like he was being stripped).

On the other hand, try talking a crackhead into giving up a $3M payday. Good luck with that.
