Why did PACQUIAO force cotto to a catchweight of 145 in the fight?

Discussion in 'World Boxing Forum' started by Doc, Dec 14, 2010.

  1. Cotto weighed in at 146 before the fight against Clottey. That's 1 pound more than the catchweight of 145 for the Pacquiao fight.

Cotto was nowhere close to being drained.

It would have been a better win for his legacy, but the fight would have gone the exact same way. The only reason behind the catch weight was the fact that Manny wasn't a full fledged Welter.....he's not even one now. And it would be the first time he was going up agianst a legit Welter that was in the prime of his career. So PAC wanted to test the waters a bit and see how fighting a 147lb champion would feel. After that win he fought Josh at 147 b/c he was comfortable and he knew he could operate effectively at that weight.

At the end of the day these are grown ass men and professionals. Their entire career in this sport is made up of risks and how to calculate those risks in order to put themsleves in position to make money and build a strong legacy. PAC was a smaller man, Cotto bigger...they BOTH wanted the fight so they negotiated a weight that was comfortable for BOTH parties and BOTH parties agreed. End of story.

the c/w was made because roach knew cotto had a green corner, and they would spend more time worrying about the weight than actually training, imo

I honestly think it was to ease Paquaio into the welterweight division.

And you'd be correct. That's the whole point of catch weights for men growing into new divsions. Usually when it's men at this level they typically go right after a top guy, sometimes a title and they work out an agreement for a catch weight. PAC has this affect on people where they get all alarmed whenever he does anything and they make a huge deal about it when it's nothing new.

Because Pac weighed in 138 for his last fight. Learn your history, apply commonsense = answer.

paul williams made sergio martinez make a catchweight of 158 for the WBC and lineal middleweight championship. but you don't see the fans here too alarmed about it.

but if it's pac, the opinions here quickly change... :-(
