Why did prime Ingo not fight Liston?

Liston would have KO'ed Ingo in one round. Unlike Floyd, he would go down once and not get up ... savage mismatch ..

Ingo, nice guy, big right hand, zero shot against Liston.

 

Liston would've killed him.

 

He was concerned more about the SCJ than anything else.

Ingo looks bad on film, but his record is not bad at all. Much worse opponents lasted more than one round against Liston, and Ingo usually boxed on the defensive, so I don't think it would be quite that quick. If Liston tried to bullrush Ingo he might well have run into that right.

 

Ingo is quite underrated. At the time when he beat Machen and Patterson he was a geat fighter. Liston would pobably beat him but it would not be a mismatch. When Ingo beat Machen, Machen was the number one contender afterwards he fought the champ, granted the champ a rematch andtried to win the title back. When should he have fought Liston?

Liston had his boxing license revoked which post-poned the match for a while until Liston became the champion. To better prepare for the contest, Johansson decided to take on Brian London as a warm-up fight. After looking very bad against London, he retired.

I know, B. I know. You are not "technically" allowed, but you have to remember, these were different times. Some people decided to blind their opponents because apparently it's an edge or something, I don't know. But, Ingo was not down with this and decided to duck the SCJ. :-(

Yeah, was going to say Ingo/Liston was on the table but as mentioned got postponed.

Ingo never ducked him like being implied here...well I see Magoo has at least corrected himself Ingo was confident of his chances. Though the London fight would show he was damaged goods after the Patterson Trilogy.
