The difference in speed from the John Ruiz fight to the 2nd Antonio Tarver fight is really weird to say the least. I know he got caught using PEDs but I doubt they make that much of a difference
Also Ruiz would be a lot slower moving than a prime Tarver. It would make the speed difference even more obvious comparitively. But yeah, everyone gets old at some point.
-25 pounds, it's much easier to go up in weight, than it is to come down. He was old in the first tarver fight
He had almost 20 pounds of excess muscle put on himself for John Ruiz, and then he kept that weight on expecting a Tyson fight. Now imagine that: one moment you're being told you'll be fighting the biggest name in boxing for your biggest ever payday, and the next you're told you have to shed 20 pounds of muscle against someone called Antonio Tarver. I bet that weight was a right ***** to get off.
But why did RJJ do that? Seeing his name and status, People should be moving up to his weight class not the other way around. Was he just that desperate for money?
He fought while severly dehydrated in the Tarver I fight, which would of meant his brain had less protection from Tarvers punches. Less brain fluid to cushion the impact of the blows. He also lost the will to train hard and was cutting corners in camp
Age + the massive fluctuations in weight. A lot of figthers aren't the same after going way up in weight and coming back down in a short period. Simples.
To be fair, he looked better in the second Tarver fight until the KO than he had in the first fight. By the time he fought Glen Johnson he was a shell. There's obviously physical reasons why he declined, but psychologically he was never the same after getting knocked out.
