Why did Roy Jones ruin his career the way he did?

It just amazes me that he took all those tough fights when he was clearly past it. It's so ****ing sad and ******ed. Roy could have laid claim to the BEST OF ALL TIME. And this is coming from a guy who didn't respect him until the end of his career for taking the tough fights.

Good post. In my mind Jones did a couple of things wrong during his career, the worst of which was taking easy fights. When it was clear that he was head and shoulders above everyone at lightweight he should have moved to crusier weight for a few fights. I'm not sure if my time line is right but I believe Jirov would have been a very interesting fight. Then he should have moved up to heavy earlier.

The problem with Jones or Mayweather, who are both exceptionally talented fighters by anyone's defination, is that they never wanted to do what Duran did, which was fight so far above your natural weight that you could loose. You can't truly be great unless you're prepared to lay it on the line and risk loosing and I don't think neither of these two fighters wanted to take that risk.

Jones of course did end up loosing but I don't think he expected. Duran had to know he was likely going to loose to Barkley and Hagler. I'm really surprised he took the Barkley fight given that Barkley KO'd Hearns twice.. that's guts.

I agree that he should have stayed at HW, Ruiz was the icing on the cake but any HW after that would have only pushed Roy further up the ATG ranks & a defeat wouldn`t have damaged his legacy as much as moving back down & losing to guys like Tarver (never a great fighter)

I was disappointed with Roy, he should have reached for immortality by challenging Lennox Lewis... Morales would have :D

Lewis maybe not, but Tyson would have been interesting. Holyfield too.

Roy only moved up to HW for Ruiz, he didn't want ANY of the other belt holders who would have ripped his head off. Of course he chooses the easy prey, one of the worst HW's of all time to hold a belt.

    Wow, super closed minded.

Roy would have gotten a pass to not fight Lewis or either Klit brother. He was 5'11 195.

He could have fought the small heavies who were still bigger than him and made his own name at heavyweight.

    Dumb ass.

He had tons of heavies who were around Ruiz size.

Holyfield- way to slow to beat RJJ
Oquendo- slow and not that big a puncher, RJJ wins
Byrd- toughest fight for Roy, probably avoids it
Rahman- RJJ wins on pure speed and I love Rahman, he's my boy
    Brewster- too slow for RJJ

when he started getting hit on his Glass Jaw he started getting KOed. It is that simple. He doesn't have a Chin.

And Lewis was 6 ****ing 6 250, so were the Klit brothers. Also they were much stronger and faster than Ruiz.

Get off my nuts cause you are wrong, ho.

Not even close. His speed took a hit and his reflexes were his defense. Once the reflexes slowed he got hit. But at heavyweight he wouldn't have needed the reflexes as much since they are way slower than guys at 175.

Your partly right, but he started taking the shots because he slowed down. I think his chin was so so. I was watching some of his fights earlier today and Montell Griffin hit him was a pretty hard left hook than Jones walked into and he shook it off no problem. It was their first fight and I think it was round 5, if not round 5 it was after that round.

If Roy decided to stay at the HWD after he beat Ruiz, it would not make much difference. It didn't matter where he was at that time since he was on the decline and he seemed not know that.

Jones was done after he got Ko'd by Tarver. That's the truth!
