Why did Roy Jones ruin his career the way he did?

I didn't see a decline until he dropped the weight to go back to 175. To each their own.

I think he would have been better off staying at heavy. He was already bulked up, faster than anyone at the weight, and could have hand picked some top guy and just added to his resume.

My only complaint is that he should have done this about 4 years earlier than he did, or at least have gone to cruiserweight.

That too. He could have went to cruiser and kicked ass then retired.

Shame of what could have been RJJ and what ended up being RJJ.

He should have never went back down to LH. He lost 20 pounds of muscle and he paid dearly for it. Repeatedly too!

we do know that jones only put 8lbs on for his trip to heavyweight

    jones weighed 193 for ruiz

and the day before his weigh ins at light heavyweight he weighed 185 and lost the rest in the steam room before putting it back on after weigh in.

was it really that hard for jones to lose 8lbs over 8 months before the 1st tarver fight? 1lb a month?

if so, surely he would be adjusted to the weight by the time of tarver 2 & 3 and johnson?

one things for sure, jones looked a million dollars in his wins against ajamu, hanshaw, trinidad, sheika, and lacy. its just a pity that calzaghe boxed his head off inbetween that winning run.

That run he made after the 3 fight losing streak he looked great. Hand speed was definitely there. His opponents were selected carefully though. No one can deny that.

his performances after calzaghe against sheika and lacy were genuinely ****ing brilliant.

if they were the same performances but before jones lost to tarver, they would be held up today as 2 of the finest exhabitions of roys career :deal

    :rofl

Shame Roy didn't fight the best when he was still the baddest man around. When he was fighting the scrubs of the world I would have picked him to beat Green, Calzaghe, even Hopkins.

sometimes a guy can come out of rubble and have a last really good performance we saw it with Jones v Lacy and Morales more recently

Roy ruined himself going back down from heavy to light heavy. Fact.

Chris Byrd went down from heavy to light heavy at the end of his career, and in the process went from being a solid-chinned fighter (who went 12 with Wlad and Tua) to getting stopped by a journeyman at 175.

The scale was wrong. Roy reweighed himself immediately after the weigh in and was 200 lbs
