Liston hated needles and the like but from the way you hear it he was a hardcore alcoholic from the turn he has barely past being a teenager. The man drank a lot, hence getting drunk and being picked up by police constantly.

Being picked up for talking with somebody on a corner of the street or for driving to slow aren't reasons. The cops just wanted to **** him up.

He was unfairly picked up and he was legitimately picked up more then once for being drunk in public. Very drunk.

Here is something else for the younger posters to consider.

Years ago (say 30-40 years ago), it was fairly common for men in
the forty-fifty year age range to suddenly die from heart failure.

(BTW, I'm 47 years old, so I am speaking from memory).

Smoking was very common as was drinking and combined with
unhealthy diets, this resulted in lots of deaths from heart disease
    at a relatively young age.

Nowadays, you see 55 year old men that still look youthful and healthy.

Better diets, less smoking, less drinking go a long ways to keeping men
    healthy longer.

Sonny Liston had a very hard life and was probably a bit older than
    his "official age".
