As many times as he did? I'm looking at 4, skimmimg over his record. Doesn't strike me as the sort to get disaqualified a lot?
Well, the DQ's he exchanged with Carnera were almost certainly pre-arranged. He did have nearly 300 fights, so it may simply have been the law of averages. I don't know the chronology of when protective cups entered into widespread use, but there would have likely been many more disqualifications for low blows before their introduction. Many DQ's come about as the result of retaliatory action for fouling, and it may be that he was suckered by an instigator. But as has already been pointed out, many of his bouts were indeed "irregular."
