Same reason as Lewis waited for Tyson to age.

The Rock was a late sub for a hurt Povetkin and wouldnt normally have gotten the shot, Wlad took **** for it but on short notice a guy who held the belt within a yr or two is ok

Briggs i didnt like the fight but since Briggs talked so much ****, like Haye they gave him the fight

KO Kidd, the question was not why Rahman/Briggs got their shots when they were about 40 and past prime, but why Klitschkos did not fight them earlier. Or why they didn't fight Tyson/Holyfield/whoever when it was still worth something.

I think at the beginning their careers were supposed to take typical German route (no offence intended) - that is, win a belt first, and than defend it as many times as possible against mediocre opponents.

In the meantime good/great fighters of 90's retired or got completely shot, so now they can still defend the belts against mediocre opponents... the difference is that now those fighters are often the best of what is left.

They had to wait cuz they were just so terrified of them. They both still have nightmares of having to fight them while they were in their primes. All joking aside both brothers would have smashed on Briggs or Rahman in their primes, though Briggs would have had a chance of laying Wladimir out in the early rounds, but more than likely Briggs wouldn't have done it, would have gassed, and then got flattened.

Vitali is still as scared of Rahman as he was when he canceled all the dates with him until he finally fled into temp retirement and sent his little brother to get the job done

Vitali had his chance and got hurt, i suppose Wlad could have unified but Rahman took the Toney fight instead and then was forced to fight mandatory Maskaev

Briggs called out Wlad after the Brock fight but then had to face mandatory Ibragimov, then rather than fight the guy who lost to Iggy he beat Iggy instead

And Wlad and Vitali never fought Tyson because Wlad pursued the bigger fight in Lennox but lost to Sanders, Tyson and his people probably were not interested in a guy who got blasted by Sanders so they took the bigger fight everyone wanted, Lewis

Vitali didnt fight Tyson because Williams beat him, he was gonna but he made the fight move fighting the guy that beat him rather than a Tyson who was just beat

Holyfield was fighting for the IBF and WBA in the early 00's, Vitali retired 04 Wlad was on the recovery trail then Donald and Toney retired him then he came back in 06 and chose to fight Iggy and Valuev

Wlad and Rahman are not the same age. Wlad was born in 1976 while Rahman was born in 1972. And by looking at the way they preserved their health and atleticism, I would stand by the fact the the age difference between them is even larger.

That's why Lewis was paid $4million + a WBC belt handed to him in 1996' from Mike Tyson and Don King.

Briggs has a shot against anyone if he can hit you early, but if he doesnt finish them he wont win. So no, dont think Briggs would have beaten them at any point. I watched Briggs back in the day on espn when he came out like a terror and destroyed no names like everyone else does coming up, but he didnt faster and more exciting. but when he got gassed or beat or whatever the first time that didnt work against Wilson wasnt a good sign. I have looked at his record and seriously in almost 50 fights he has, h has only beaten 2 people his entire career that were ranked.
    1) Foreman (most thought Briggs lost and ran from a 48 year old foreman)
    2) Lycovich - behind on all cards with last second win.

so he has alot of people fooled, thats for sure
