they dont? look at Ricky Hatton..lol...but in fairness...plenty of old school fighters kept their chin down and didnt fall into clinch after clinch...

good point...i know from the boxing i have done..that it is actually much easier to slip shots when you drop your hands..then you have those hands down..and they can come up out of no where (where your opponent doesnt see them) and connect with allot of power...of course i have only ever done this in sparring...and when I would...the trainers would yell QUINN KEEP YOUR DAMN HANDS UP...even if i just sent the other guy across the ring with a counter shot....anyhow...

i agree not all old timers fall into clinch after clinch but a lot do...

and yeah good point about it being easier to slip shots with hands down,
and what gregdempsey about sending guys back with a counter shot,

i seen that happen a ton of times, some guys do fight better with their hands down

i like to keep my left down often, but overall, keeping your hands up is a lot safer

We also have to ask how representative the fighters that we have film of are.

The fighters of who footage survives tend to be the elite of their era who would be less obliged to adopt orthodox tactics due to their level of natural talent.

If the only fighters you had footage of from this era were Roy Jones, Vitally Klitschko and David Haye then you might get a misleading picture.
